I am currently steadily buying everything I need for a corn snake setup and have a couple of questions.
1. I'm going to be purchasing a heat mat and thermostat soon and was wondering whether I need a heat lamp as well?
2. I have purchased an exo terra faunarium for my future corn snake, are these escape proof as i am slightly concerned about whether a hatchling could squeeze through the vents?
3. Is aspen ok for hatchlings as a substrate?
4. Is it true that corn snakes dont need their food dusting with vitamin or calcium powder? |

1 a heatmat on 24/7 is absolutely fine
2 post a pic of the faun so we can see
3 fine but kitchen roll is often more practical for hatchies
4 yes
have a read of the care sheet for more info too |

| Thanks for the quick reply. Haven't got a pic of it. Like i said its exo terra and the vents are a few mm if that! Lol. I would be very impressed if a snake could fit through them. |

E-T fauns AREN'T escape-proof  but i don't think its the vents as such that are an issue................for a start there's the pop-off lid! lol |

To be fair on vet runs I put my fully grown in fauns, and they don't pop the lids off. (not for lack of trying!)
Saying that, I hope she doesn't atm, as am sitting at work with her under my desk so my OH can pick her up in 2 hours for the vet run....

| if its really young probably best to use sheets of kitchen roll that is less likely to be ingested. |

It's easier to use kitchen roll with babies, with other substrate you can be digging about like time team looking for poos.
I use the head rule, if it looks like a snake could squeeze it's head through a gap, it can escape.
You don't need a heat lamp and corns don't need their food dusting. |

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I just need to secure the lid to stop it escaping. More questions lol
What age can you tell the sex of a corn snake?
Do they hurt when they bite as hatchlings? I mean even slightly? Lol |

whatever you do, don't use tape anywhere near snakes, even on the outside! Its nasty evil stuff if they get stuck to it, I'm speaking from experience of taping down lids :(
...as for bites, no it doesn't hurt but the speed that it happens takes you by surprise every time :) |
