I buy my mice pre-killed and frozen from the petshop. Sometimes they have a little blood on them and sometimes they dont.

Just wondering how they kill them. I buy large adult mice for my snake but how on earth could you kill a pinky without turning it to... mush??

Most places will use co2 gas, at low concentrations it causes the mice to sleep, and then they turn up the concentration and it kills them, that's the most widely used method. I think the bit of blood is a by product of this.
Pinkies can be killed with ice water, the shock kills them almost instantly, I was dubious, so I tried it, and it was very quick.

Lol, no worries. I am stuck at work so am trawling the forum!!
If I have the answers I will give them! If I don't, I might have an idea!
I breed my own mice, so have a little experience with it.
The only difference is when I cull my lot, generally its a sharp blow to the head, well, they come into contact with the work top quite quickly!
That method is no good for pinkies, they don't have the body strength to cope with the impact, and have a habit of exploding! Only did it once!

I have heard that you can put your pinkies into a sealed container then put them in the freezer to kill them. I don't know if this does work.

I guess it what you would be most comfortable doing to kill them

Theres nothing gross about it, its gotta be done, and its one of the quickest methods.

If you are gonna put pinkies in the freezer alive, then you may aswell just use the freezing water, its much quicker.
There is no point in making them suffer anymore than absolutely needed. Which ideally, shouldnt be at all.
I know people who put them in the freezer live, and it is quick yes, but i care whether they suffer or not, so i choose the method that is gonna cause them the least amount of suffering.

I've seen little spots of blood on some of the fuzzies i've bought. I always thought they injected them with something to kill them and the spot of blood was from the needle. Hmmmm, you learn something everyday. lol

I've heard about the freezer method, I think if I had mice breed for food I would use this method to kill them. I know people whack them against the viv corner but I don't think I could do that and knowing my luck, I wouldn't kill them in one hit XP

Some of the mice I get, as they defrost, blood comes out of their nose, I have no idea if this is to do with the method of killing of just the fact it's a mouse defrosting. Some also "poo" when I defrost them :p

Never ever put mice in the freezer, pinkies die of shock very quickly, however adults don't, they freeze, then die, its incredibly painful and should never be done, ever.

Ah ok, I got told the cold made them slow down and eventually go to sleep and then die. Learn something new everyday ^^
