I'll edit this post when my camera's charged up to show you mine.

I can't see the picture well, so here's what I've done.

If its a RUB/faun, people tend to tape the stat probe to the heatmat, as the mat is outside the faun, but my stat and thermo probes are inside the tub ontop of the mat, tempreture at the moment is 28.8* Its personal preference whether the stat is inside or out, personal prefernece, if it works, dont try to fix it.

If its a viv, then the heatmat goes in the viv, with the probes ontop of it, with a scattering of bedding on the mat. Not loads as it will stop the heat coming through.

edit: heres my probes mate,

There is a bare scattering on my mat most of the time, if Blaze doesnt move it all.. but the stat probe the way its fixed is always in contact with the floor and no chips/aspen can get under it, as my RUB's a jungle I can't move anything without getting aspen everywhere.

Perfectooo.

Heres how i did it too;

Hope this helps somehow.

Indeed, sticky tape is a big no no

It could get stuck to your snake and do some serious damage.

Maybe you could try holding them down with a heavy hide or something simialr. My corns are held down by their hide and Rockies is held down with some pebbles

It is difficult knowing how best to position and keep your probes held down Mojo. I can totally understand why you felt taping the probes down was a good idea as it does keep them in place, but it can be dangerous to the snake so it would be best to remove it as soon as possible.

In both my vivs the probes are held down by a rock in one and a pile of pebbles in the other. Neither of my hides are heavy enough to hold them down and it is not a good idea to have them going inside the hide as the heat they are reading will then be effected by the snake curling on top of them. It is a good idea to rubber band the probes together, or use cable ties making sure they are twisted so no ends are poking out, as then you know they are reading the temp from the same place.

30oC is the maximum you really want your temps, if anything it is bordering on too high. Are you using a microclimate on/off stat by any chance? I had one and had exactly the issue you had, with it switching off and then allowing the temp to drop nearly 5oC before switching back on. I know some people may be happy with that but I didnt like the major fluctuation in temp so returned it and changed to a habistat pulse stat instead and that keeps the temps within a degree of what I want. I do wonder if your stat is malfunctioning as I know others who do use the on/off stat and dont have such a major drop in temps.

I hope this has been of some help, it really is a case of working out what is safest and works best for your snake.

xxx

My apologies, I couldv'e and shouldv'e worded my reply better,

As Danny said if your snake gets stuck to the sticky tape, and as it strugles, or you help him, it could tear off his scales and shouldn#t be used.

you could wrap them in an elastic band, weigh them down with something or cable tie them down.

OK just came back to check this post and saw your all saying get the sticky tape out, the only thing I have to hand is some fairly large decorative rocks we have in a bowl in our lounge.

Would they be OK to use to hold the probe down? Tomorrow ill be re doing the whole set-up anyway when he's out for his feed because I want to melt a neat hole through the tank for the wires.

I thought the way i had the tape was ok because it isn't double sided and is flush to the bottom of the faun, but i can see your points :)

Cheers all

ps: i am using a on/off stat yeah but since posting it does seem to fluctuate a bit less, ill be investing in a pulse one in the future though
