I was just feeding my corn snake in a separate box (as opposed to his viv) and his tail started rattling against the cardboard box (really fast, like a rattle snake) as i gave him his food. Has anyone else ever experienced this? because it seemed very strange to me?

My OH didnt believe me when I told him that corn snakes rattle!!! He had to see it and hear it before he believed me. It is amazing the way they do it and the sound it makes....and it certainly is not something you would expect.

It is just a defensive response and nothing to be worried about, just stay calm and confident and continue with whatever you are doing with him. He will settle down and stop doing it when he feels safe and secure.

Have you fed him in the box before or was it a new experience? Were you giving him his food in a different way to normal? I am just wondering why he might do it now....although corns dont need a reason to make us confused and worried .

As Kellog said. They do mainly do it when they are scared but also if you make them jump if you wake them up a bit suddenly. Did he get into a striking pose or was he just rattling? I have one that rattles at food too specially when I bring the food to him. It's a bit better if I bring him to the food.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

Most snakes a little like me really, defensive of their food!! That's all it is, they don't want something else coming and taking their mouse away, so they act all big and scary!
Even my most placid snake gets the hump if I get too close!! Its nothing to worry about.

yeh 2 of my corns have done this. my king snake did it alot for the first 2 weeks after i got it. They are just being defensive or frightened and giving you a warning. if they do rattle its best to leave them alone till they settle again it doesnt necesseraly mean they are going to bite but a possibility
