| How big is the viv and how old is the snake? Does it come with equipment? Depending on this you might be getting a bit of a bad deal and then you should tell him to get money off lol |

| its a couple of years, its a 3 foot viv and all equipment is included :) although i think the heat mat may need replacing, but luckily i have a spare in teh house already |

As he is your best mate's brother couldnt you offer to pay in instalments but take the snake as soon as he needs you to? I am sure he can trust you to continue to pay him what you owe him monthly once you have got it. Make an agreed amount....and keep to it! It definitely sounds worth it.
