I've got a 3' x 18" x 18" vivarium with a couple of little white air vents in the back. I'm planning on making the Vivarium a bit of a living room feature and so am considering buying some of that Exo Terra fake rock background for the back and sides. Obviously this will cover over the vents. The room it's in is north facing and get almost no direct sunlight. So it tends to be a little cooler rather than hotter anyway.
Can I assume that the vents are just fitted as standard and don't make a huge amount of difference to the well being of the snake. I suppose I could try to cut out holes for the vents as these backgrounds are polystyrene but I'm just as likely to end up cutting them to bits.... I have two left hands when it comes to DIY
Any thoughts are much appreciated |

Pop the vents out and put the styrene in place, the mark the styrene from the back through the vent holes then remove the styrene and put the vents back.
You should now have a bit of styrene with the holes marked, and what I've found is BRILLIANT for cutting holes in styrene perfectly for those that think they may stuff it up is....... A Tin can.
Cut the lid off the tin can the wrong way (so the top has the sharp edge) then you have a near perfect size to cut through the polystyrene with the tin can. Just place it on top of the markings and push and twist and it'll cut it's way through and leave the excess styrene inside the can, very little mess then. |

In answer to the other question, the air vents allow the circulation of air within the viv, although not having won't make the air un breathable, it will let it go stale quite quickly, so its a good idea to keep them. |

I cut holes in an exoterra background by marking them out in the way kehhlyr said. Works a treat. The only problem I found with it is that because those backgrounds have a cutout space at the back for the wires, it leaves a gap for snakie to snuggle in behind. I had one in Izzys viv and once he discovered he could get behind it we never saw him. And i had to take the entire viv contents out to be able to pull it out so I could get him out again. I gave up with it in the end. |

Good call and I'll remember that. I'll try to make a plug for the cable run gap out of the bit I cut out. It's not happening for a week or two but I'll try to do a few pics when it's done. |
