Hi guys!

I'm new here and i wasn't sure which sub forum to post this in, so please forgive me if there's a more suitable forum.

Anyway, 6 months ago my boyfriend bought me a corn (Saphira)for my birthday and i nstantly fell in love with her! it's amazing how much joy this baby snake brings me lol I instantly felt a connection with her and we've become very attached to each other. I know some people on here say snakes can't ever be 'tame' but i really feel she is. Anyway, i'm rambling! lol

Basically, she's about 11 months old now and i'm moving house on saturday. I'm a little concerned 'cos it's a 3 hour drive to my new house and i was wondering how much of an effect this will have on Saphira? I want to make the trip as stress free for her as i possibly can. Does anyone have any experience with this? She's a very timid snake to start with and it's taken me a while to get her 'tame' and comfortable around humans and being handled, so naturally i'm worried the drive might really stress her out

Also, whilst i'm here, could i also ask how much i should be feeding her at her age? At the moment, she's on 2 - 3 pinkies per week (as the pet store advised me) but i think she may be more suited to a small fuzzy instead of 2 - 3 pinkies?

Any help on both issues would be great!

Davey

Hi Davey. It is lovely reading your post as it shows just how much Saphira means to you....and that is something that all of us on here understand.

I am no expert of travelling with snakes but can understand your concerns. I know that other forum members have travelled for 2/3 hours with hatchlings and young corns in small plastic takeaway-style boxes with airholes drilled through, with a small waterbowl and a piece of kitchen roll inside, placed inside a bag so that it is dark and quiet. This means she will have water and a hide. You could put kitchen roll on the bottom of the box with a sprinkling of the substrate from her viv so that she has her smell in there already. Whatever you are going to put in as a hide, it might be an idea to put it in her viv now so she gets used to it and gets her smell on it.

Obviously you mustnt move her during the 48hrs after a feed and once she is in your new house and back in her viv I would leave her for a week without feeding or handling to allow her to settle down and get over the stress of the move.

As for what she should be feeding on, I do wonder whether 2 pinkies is a bit of a small meal for a 6 month old....although all snakes differ. Is there a bump once she has eaten them? How much does she weigh? That is one way of assessing what she should be feeding on, but only with knowledge of your snake and common sense. Unfortunately a lot of us have found that many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you. I know that I double check anything I am told on here.

I hope I have been of some help, but I am sure that someone with experience of moving a snake will be along soon to tell you how they did it!

I've taken mine for long drives as she's had to stay with mates before now, and she's been fine.
I used to put water in, but due to the nature of cars and a snake trying to get out, it always ends up everywhere, so I don't put a bowl in for the journey. (I do check on her though!)
I put substrate from her viv in.
I travel mine in a faunarium as it's light and easy to transport.

When mine have had to do long travels in the past, they normally get put into a pillowcase which is tied up leaving only about 1/4 of the pillow case accessible.
I then stick that into a RUB or into a tupperware box for the car journey. I just tend to make sure that the snakie has had nothing to eat for at least 5 days before hand, and I personally remove the water bowl about 24 hours before the drive as well.

Generally if they go back into their existing rub/viv after the move then they settle back quite quickly, the only real difference they have is a change of scenery outside the viv, which is still under debate as to if they can see that or not.

I do generally same as Kehhlyr, most of my snakes have come from large distances, even Germany. So long as your snake doesnt have too much space to move about and wont get thrown about in the Rub or plastic box during the journey, possibly even place scrunched up newspaper in the travel box to prevent hard knocks against the sides.

Hey Kellog,

Thanks for the reply! Yes, she's means the world to me...it's weird, i've instantly fallen in love with her hehe

Sorry, i think i may have confused you in my post, saphira is 11 months old, she was 6 months when we got her. So i'm just a bit worried if i'm over feeding her or whether she's just greedy lol

Thanks for the advice. I think i'll make her a little hide out of a few toilet tubes or something. I just really hope the trip doesn't stress my girl out too much

Thanks everyone. Some great tips and advice! I think i'll put her in a little plastic box (with some air holes in).

Thanks to Kehhlyr, great advice =) I usually feed her on a saturday (cos that's the day she usually had her feed from the breeder)and we're moving on saturday, will she be ok if i don't feed her until early next week? That's around 9 days...don't want the poor girl to go too hungry.

Thanks again

xXx

Dont worry Davey, it was my error....down to posting at 6am after virtually no sleep !!

So, do you mean that she is 11 months old and being fed on 2 -3 pinkies a week? What does she weigh and is there a bump once she has eaten her pinkies?

Am so glad others came on who had experience with travelling, knew that we had forum members who have gone long distances with their snakes - as Gmac said, some have even come from overseas. At least you now know what is best to do with her to prepare her to travel and to allow her to travel safely and as stress-free as possible .
