hi i'm new to this forum so hi to all, also new to keeping corn snakes or any snake for that matter. a week last sunday we got what we was told a hyper corn snake, not very old around 16 inches in length. we wasnt told much about him as we were served by a young lass in the shop as the owner was tied with other people. he seems very happy and active when out of the viv, which is small 30cm x 30cm x 30cm. we have a heat mat underneath as the viv is glass covering 1/3 set on a thermostat to 30c. the cool end is averaging 21c. both areas have a hide yet he climbs to the top where there is a ledge just under the lid and hides there all the time. when we get him out he feels really cold. just a bit worried he's not getting the heat he needs. can anyone explain his behaviour or are we doing somthing wrong, help please. thanks |

this is pretty much normal behaviur to explore and find favourite places, when he needs a heat he will no doubt go over to the hot end.
the other thing worth remembering is that corn snakes wont feel warm to the touch as they are cooler than our normal body temps so when you touch them they will seem cooler.
edited to add, you say you have set the stat to 30 are you monitoring this with a thermometer in the hot end? |

Bear in mind that because the temp is set to 30, doesn't mean the snake is gonna be 30, so what may feel cold to you may not be as cold as you think, right now my hands are roughly 30 degrees, so a snake that is 27 is not going to feel hot like you think it should. As for the setup, 30 is a bit warm as an allrounder, spikes to 30 are fine but ideally for an everyday temp you want to be around 27. You also need to make sure you can accurately monitor temps, so a digi thermometer is a must, the dials on the stat are not accurate in the slightest! Where do you have the stat probe? Ideally, as the mat is not in the tub you can tape the probe to it, if you do that, also tape the thermometer probe alongside it. |
