Hello
Me and my boyfriend have two snakes, a snow corn with red eyes (which is my boyfriend's)and I have just got a baby corn snake. I'm pretty new at this and he's not used to being handled yet (already been bitten) but i'm determined and otherwise he seems happy and healthy.

Anyway just though I would say hi to everyone!

Thanks everyone! I'm not too worried about the biting and i know it doesn't hurt but it is making me jump which i don't want to do and scare him. Junior looks just like the one in your picture stotty01 - do you know what this colouring and pattern is called.

Hi Sarah, it is really good that you have joined us! You will find that this is a great forum with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. And the bonus is that you get lots of fun and friendship too . I know your OH has his own corn, although I am not sure for how long....but it is always good to learn what you can by yourself instead of making him think you cant do it without him (you know how men love that feeling !!). I am not sure how much information you already know about corn snake keeping, so sorry if I am repeating information you already know....but it is better heard twice than not at all.

Am sure you have already browsed the TCS site and forum, and found that it provides great information. The best place to look is http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm, it has lots of information for new snake owners. Also read this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133

How long have you had Junior? You say you have just got him....we always suggest you follow the one-week rule (it is more of a guide than a rule but worth adhering too!)....no handling or feeding for the first week to allow your snake to get over the stress of the move and for it to get used to the new smells and its new surroundings. This means just putting your hand in to change the water daily and straighten the substrate, so it can get used to your smell and not be threatened by you. You mustnt worry about your corn not feeding for that week, corns are a lot hardier than we realise and going for a week without food will not do them any harm, no matter how small they are. You are rarely advised this in a lot of pet shops but it is an important way of getting your snake to de-stress and feel safe with you. It is a hard week, very frustrating, but worth it for the snake's sake. If he hasnt had that chance to settle in it may explain why he is a bit snappy....if that is the case then it may be worthwhile starting that week from now. Also checkout out this topic, it gives some good advice on how to go about beginning to handle your little one (although I am sure your OH has already told you all of this ) - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8735. But, as the others have said....it just takes time and patience, and is a case of quality of handling not quantity.

You will find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc. Even on here you will find that people have different opinions.....but at least you have a place to ask what you need to know and get the answers from experienced owners. Then you can decide what to do with what you are told.

Unfortunately a lot of us have found that many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . I know that I double check anything I am told on here. On this forum no question is regarded as a silly question....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button....type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!

I am not sure if you have thought of doing this, but I keep my own 'Snake Diaries', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems, when you do full viv cleans. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog and Silvesta poo !!

Unwritten forum rule - pics as soon as possible! This link will help - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14. If Junior is anything like Stotty's Medusa then he is probably an anery....but I am terrible at morphs so the sooner we see pics the sooner you can discover what morph Junior is - that should be incentive enough to get pics up !!

A warning - corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is ****, I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" You OH is already on that corn path and you have just started down that path so be warned!!

xxx

Thanks for all that information Kellog its really useful. My OH has had his snake for bout 8 months so he's fairly new at it himself. I have had Junior for a week but to be fair it wasn't much of a move for him as my firend who lives upstairs in our share house breeds snakes which is where I got him. When it comes to food he seems to be a bit of a monster and has taken two pinkies this week absolutely no problem.
I agree witht he letting him get settled but I have been getting him out all week just for short periods of time and he is already better at being handled and no more bites(yet!).
I actually have a degree in zoology and although reptiles are not my specialist subject I am fairly confident when it comes to animal behaviour.
Thanks for all the welcomes and I promise pics will be on asap!
