I used to keep corn snakes years ago and always had a uv light and mat on a stat.
Well we "aquired" a baby corn yest and he is on a mat with a stat but we need to set up a new viv soon. I wanted to know is it compulsary to have a uv or can we just used a caged bulb?

The snake will be fine with just a mat, the only reason many people have lights is to see in and tell the snake if tis day or night.

Edit = welcome to the forum by the way

They don't need UV. As Matt says the matt will be fine. Also, if you get a low watt energy saving bulb it should produce enough heat to require a guard?

i've just set up a new viv for cecil and used a red aquatic lamp, four led,s so it don't get hot and looks cool at night.
