The amel I bought recently is supposed to be a female, the previous owners even say they've had her lay eggs although s/he was in with another snake (yeah I know...... !) I always thought I was fairly good at sexing ADULT snakes purely by tail length and shape (subsequently confirmed by probing) but how accurate is this method?
Basically I'm asking as I'm convinced Beech the obese amel is a boy Pics to follow. |

probing is 100% accurate. popping is not.
females; the probe will enter no more than the width at the point where the anal vent is. if the anal vent measures 1/2" across the probe will enter 1/2" & be solid when reaching the end.
male; basically if the probe enters more than this & is 'spongey' or 'bouncey' at the end.
Be very gentle if doing this as it can seriously damage the snake as can popping!
I would still say to learn how to do either or both though, it will come in very handy.

from talking to a few herp people probing isn't 100% accurate as males sometimes clench and probe as female. Lets face it - if you had a probe up your bits you'd probably clench too!! Think I need to take him/her to someone more experienced as I'd prefer to be taught how to do it rather than read up then go for it (but good reading Blackecho

never heard about the clenching ? i think that's a myth someone has made up so that if it turns out they sexed the snake wrong then they can use that as an excuse.
sorry but dont believe that at all. The probes are lubricated so even if the male clenched the probe would still slide to the end. |

lol, I really couldn't blame them if they did!!! The people I've spoken to about it reckon it rarely happens but is not unknown, making the 100% more like 99.something% |

if you've got a male and you pop his bits out - great you've got a male, if you've got a snake and its bits DON'T pop out when you try, is it a male and you're doing something wrong or is it REALLY a girl That would be my concern, as well as the limited timescale for popping then without hurting them. |
