don`t you use that sort of moss at breeding stage before the eggs are fertilised

But Grumpy was one of the seven dwarfs so it can't be a Northern thing!

I know moanjy, mardy and 'having the monk on' are all Northern terms for being soft, grumpy or sulky, but I wouldn't say grumpy was.

I heard that the eggs sometimes shrink a bit as they loose internal mass due to the yolk being used up in the later stages. The same is true for chicken eggs however we don't notice due to the firm shell.
Perhaps that might be it as with all the extra moisture you have added I doubt its dehydration.
