hi, i was just curious about wot you guys use to light your vivs.
i started off with a small little flourescent tube about 8 watt but wen ever it was on chester would never come out. He would wait with his head poking out of his hide until it went out then came out and about.
Changed it to a 40w red reflector lamp but that seems to make the viv to hot. it is normally about 22'C with just the heat mat on but then wen i put light on it it raises to about 31'C. I only really use the light for decoration and to be able to see the little fella.
Any thoughts on this please |

I just use a normal bulb. Energy saving for my corns, just because they don't really need light. It's only for decoration so we can see them. |

I have a 12 inch 'Dome' light in my Viv, it doesn't let off a great deal of heat, it's actually designed for bathrooms. I have to be careful though, as once or twice my snakes have gotten into the cover, although this hasn't happened when the light is on, so I used to have to check, before I turned it on. I modified the cover, so that the plastic seal is no longer there, and it has 3 small metal clips holding it on, so if they try to get into it now, it just falls off. |

I use a low watt energy saving bulb for short periods only so I can see them. Also helps looking for poos in dark corners. |

Corns still need a light source not so necessary for nervous babys but juveniles & adults need to know whether it's day or night. 30*C is fine (no higher) for the hot end of where the snake would be hiding but 22*C is way too low. The snake wouldn't be able to digest food properly. Unless I misread & 22*C is the night temp when a red bulb is used for night viewing. UV light can be beneficial to corn snakes & can also show up their colours more which are not usually seen under 'normal' lighting or no lighting at all. |

basically i have the red light on a timer and it comes on for acouple of hours in mid morning (9-12) then again at nite.(4-11) also have a heat mat below light.(undernaeth glass viv.) wen light is on its 30-31*C wen off drops to about 22-24*C. After feeding he is normally out and about within a couple ofhours and just roams about sleeping where ever takes his fancy. he has a hide at each end and one in the middle. He was fed last nite and as we speak heis basking under his lamp on his bit of bark.
does all this seem ok. som any opinions on lighting and heating, very confusing.
cheers

i use a 60w bulb in my viv and a small heat mat, which are both on the same side, my viv is quite tall as my two corns like to climb alot so during the day temp is around 30c and when light goes off at 8pm temp is about 24c for the night |
