Hello, new user / new corn snake owner here.

Offered a good home to a 2yr old corn snake from a work colleague who was giving away...done lots of research and spent a few quid...now just need a little confirmation advice as to the vivarium heating.

Long winded post warning (although I'm a firm believer in details).

The current set up is a 3ft wide wooden & glass fronted vivarium.

Heatsource 1 is a 60w covered ceramic bulb fitted to the left hand side panel at the top of the viv, then controlled by a dimmer stat, set at around 76 deg. The probe is dangling about half way into the viv at the same side as the ceramic bulb.

Heatsource 2 is a 20w 17" heat mat fitted to the floor inside the viv on the left hand side, a layer of tin foil underneath the mat and two ceramic "bathroom" tiles on top of the mat. This is then also controlled by a matstat (not dimmer type)...the probe placed under the substrate on top of the ceramic tiles...temp set at around 80 deg.

I don't seem to be getting an variation in heat from one side of the viv to the other...there are two dial thermometers (left side & right side) showing only a difference of around 2 to 3 degrees.

There are two circular vents (approx 2" diameter) on the back panel...about a quarter of the way up from the bottom, left and right hand sides.

The snake seems happy enough in his hide directly on the substrate covered tiles.

Is there perhaps too much heat being generated ?

Should the probes be places differently ?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Probes sound like they're placed fine, temp ideally shoud be around the 30c mark in the warm side.

Dial thermos are only good as decoration (IMO), a lot of others will agree as well unfortunately.
I'd recommend getting a couple of digi thermometers, you can pick em up for a few quid on ebay and some fishy shops.

Maybe turn the ceramic bulb off for a bit and see what difference that makes, but until you get better thermometers, you're not gonna know the temp properly.

Aside from that, where are the piccys of snakie??????

And welcome to the forum.

I have a similar set up in my viv (although its a red bulb not a ceramic one and both heat sources are plugged into the same stat). I get 30 degC at the warm end and whatever the ambient temp of the house is at the other.

Definitely try a different thermometer to see if the temps really are the same. My viv also has another set of circular vents at the top at each side.

I find I can get one, or two, flash photographs before Monty hides so I have to be quick and accurate (hence not that many good photo's of him!).

0.0.1 Cornsnake: Monty, 10 years old, 5ft 3".
