Impaction can be caused by basically anything that a beardie has difficulty passing.
Whether it's a stone, sand, or crickets.
Anything that could essentially block up the digestive tract. It can be treated and helped on most animals, but with a lot of lizards it can lead to paralysis, as it causes swelling of the spinal cord, which can eventually lead to other problems which are a LOT more severe.

In regards to what's better, smaller is better than bigger. With a beardie it's recommended that the food item is no bigger than the space between it's eyes. But you can go slightly larger with softer food items.

She was found in my cats mouth, she wasn't breathing when I got her out so I had to give her a bit of a massage and blow in her mouth to kick start her again.
It took a good couple days before she could move again, but even longer for her to do much else.
That was what caused the impaction in her, because of the vast amount of poo she had inside, she wasn't able to do anything about it for a couple days as she was to weak from being caught by the cat, and when she had the strength to go she was to blocked up.

Just to add, it isnt just lizards that can suffer from Impaction. Snakes that ingest substrate while feeding are likly to have it at some point. This is a good reason to feed the snake on something, or out of the viv completely.

I didn't notice that i forgot to change the beginning.
I started it as beardies, then went on to all animals while forgetting to then mention afterwards that it can happen to snakes as well.

DOH!

Matty is right in what he says as well.

In fact, somewhere I also have pics of the spinal curvature/swelling caused by Aeris' impaction, i'll have to dig them out.
