I am setting up my new glass viv and in my faun i had the thermometer probe on top of the substrate but i have just been told that i should put it on the glass at the bottom under the substrate as this will be the hottest part. I have searched old threads and they are saying different things. Can anyone tell me where it should go.

it entirely depends on what heat source you arer using, for example if you are using a heat mat that your snake coils on to, have the probe directly on top of the heat mat, tht way the heat mat will reach the required temperarture. i been using a bulb on a dimmer thermostat so i just have the probe taped in the bottom of the corner of the warmest end of the vivarium

I have a heatmat in a glass viv, my probes are resting on the substrate around the middle of the heatmat where my warm hide is.

edit: My substrate in the warm end isnt thick at all, so its a pretty much accurate reading.

i was using a bulb by day and mat by night time, but recently a reptile shop owner told me that mats are no good for adult corns even if they are thermostatically controlled they can still get thermal burns from it as the weight of the adult snake pressing down on the mat will cause those thermal burns and reccomended me to go 100% bulb day and night but i can turn the bulb temperature down by 10 degrees F at night time. so i have the probe to my thermostat fixed to the same position 24 7

I'm sorry, but that sounds absolutely daft.
Have you ever used an electric blanket? if you sleep on that over night do you wake up with 3rd degree burns? no. Hence why the stat. they get to perfect temp and stay that way.

Heatseeker, when he recommended to go to bulb for heat source did he happen to have one for sale?

if the heat mat is inside the viv then tape it to the heat mate
if the heat mat is under a fish tank then tape the prob on the inside of the viv on the glass directly above the heat mat

but personally i don't like tape or any thing sticky just in case the snake get stuck lol
i use a rock or somthing to anchor it down so it carn't realy move

later

over head heating is fine but corn snakes do better with a mat and stat
not only that it's easyer to have a hot end and a cold end with a mat

the mats are better for the snake, for when it's just had lunch, it can digest it's dinner
better with belly warmth

hope this helps

Aquarium Silicone Sealant would be better if you want to stick it down

im not sure if blue tack would be harmful for a snake.

Bulbs are better for some species off snakes but not corns. Corns need the belly heat to digest their food so heat mats are better. Dilly, i was told blue tack is safe plus you can take it off to clean.

would not recommend using sticky tape inside a viv for any reason, can cause alot of harm to the snake as there garunteed to get stuck to it.
