Hello.
Trying to get everything set up ready for my impending buy of my 1st corn. Hopfully getting it the end of next week.
But got some questions about heat mats.

1. What is the best temp for the faun during the day and night
2. The sensor that is connected to the stat, where is the best place for it to be in the faun
3. The faun i have doesnt have a hole big enough for the sensor to fit through. So i will need to make a hole, where is the best place to make the hole
4. When the stat goes off after reaching the correct temp, what temp do they come back on at
5. Where should the thermometer go in the faun Should i have one or two
6. Are heat mats and stats expensive to run

Sorry for the amount of questions but i just dont want to mess up and keep thinking im going to do things wrong.

Thanks for the help and the time it took to read it all.

1) Cold end should be about 21-23 and hot end should be around 27-30!
2) the sensor should go so it measures the temp of the substates as this is what the snake will lay on!
3) The holes should go at the bottom corner, but make sure you fill it in so ur snake cant escape!
4) They will go off at about 27 if set at 30 and come back on at about 31
5) You should have one at each end and level with substrate
6) And no they are very cheap to run as they use so little electricity

Good luck mate!!

I agree apart from this.

Because the snake will be in a faun, the mat will be on the outside. You would be better ot taping the probe directly on the mat on the outside. The snake cant move it and you wont have to make any holes in the faun.

oh and with the electricity thing, each heat mat costs about... 50p for 12 hours of electricity :)

I worked out that my beardeis UV's and heat bulbs cost me about £1 a day to run (Y)

1. 28-30*C during the day, some people set up their stats/timers for a night time drop of up to 2 degrees but this isn't necessary for corns.
2. as per mattys reply, but check the temp in the viv at the warm end and set the stat according to what that tells you.
3. if you're making holes, try to enlarge the 'push out' ones that are usually already in the faun lid
4. it varies with what type of stat you have, pulses and dimmers are accurate to +/-0.5*C whereas an on/off stat could be up to +/- 2*C. on/off stats are perfectly adequate for corns and are the cheapest option.
5. if you have one it should go in the hot end on top of the substrate above where the heatmat is, if you have another in the cool end it's good too. some digi ones have 2 probes so you can monitor the temps in both ends with the one device.
6. no idea, i'd rather not think about it!! go with PA's answer

Thanks very much for all your help. Im a bit more at ease knowing the information.
I got my own place so the electric bill is down to me and the g/f. Which is a pain in the ass.
I think i will go with putting the sensor on the heatmat itself as that when i dont need to make any holes in the faun which the corn would prob get out of knowing me. Plus that way i will get a proper reading of the temp the heat mat is giving out.
Thanks again for all your help.

One more question. If i put the stat sensor on the heat mat. Would it not pick up the right temp??
