I've decided to heat my viv using just a light on a dimmer stat (previously I used a heat mat and light on a timer but no stat). However my 60W red bulb can only just get the warm end to 28°C and is on full time, I need to get a more powerful bulb. What size are you using?

If I change to a ceramic heater bulb instead, what size would I need then?

At the moment I've got both the light and the heat mat plugged into the dimmer stat and thats working better.

The viv is wooden and 15"W x 18"H x 36" L

Thanks.

Craig.

Yeah, I think thats the way I might go. Originally I wasn't keen on the lamp being on at night but I was looking last night and the mix of red from the lamp and blue from LED's looks quite good. If I get a proper true red bulb it shouldn't disturb his day / night pattern. The bulb I have now does emit some white light where the dye thins off.

if the light is on all day and all night it will mess with your snake's head! another reason to sort out what you're doing wrong with the mat!!

Gingerpony - Its not all the time at the moment becuase I have both it and the lamp plugged in on a dimming stat. The lamp is coming on and off but it is very dimmed. I've replied on the other thread about what I'm doing with the heat mat and why I was going to remove it, but might not be now after reading yur reply about belly heat.

I had always being told that snakes couldn't see red and so didn't detect the light coming on or off. If this is not the case would it be better to use a ceramic bulb for the additional heat so that if it does come on during the night it doesn't disturb the day / night cycle.

Until recently I had the lamp on a timer so it was off at night but its only being since getting a stat that I've left it plugged in and under stat control all the time.

Thanks.

Great, I feel a lot better about leaving the lamp on the stat 24/7 now.

Thanks.

i have just went out today to get a red bulb set up
but i only want it on in the evening say 8pm till 11pm
but i keep the mat and stat on all the time

my lights are on a timer switch
norm bulb comes on 6 am till 8pm,then the red will take over till 11pm.

corn snakes do better with a mat, than just over head heating
so you can have a cooler end and a hot end

plus mats are cheaper to run 24/7

Right, I've pretty much returned my viv set up to what it has been for the last ten years. A good example of if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

My mat is on the stat 24/7, my lamp is on the same stat but will be on daylight hours only, and my LED's will come on when it gets dark - or thereabouts.

I've removed some bark off the top of my mat and thats given a bit more temp. The mistake I had made was to put a really deep layer of very fine bark over it, in the past I have used co****r bark.

Sorted, and thanks for the help.
