Well upon an examine of stormy-lad this morning he had a purple/red/blackish spot on his head. It didn't feel raised up and was rather smooth. Its the second saddle down and its right on the line of beige.
If that's a bit hard to imagine heres a rather blurry picture of it.
I have not seen him bathing and seems completely fine otherwise.
I have however noticed a few specs in his waterbowl but have noticed these before, i figure it to be dust. Theyr'e not red in colour.
Should I bath him just to be safe? How long for?
and if you think it is mites, do I bin all the aspen complete gut of his viv, disinfect and rinse and place in kitchen roll?
Do I need to shred to kitchen roll and how deep?
Cheers. I'm probably over-reacting a little bit.. but can someone either clarify it IS mites or NOT. [:s] |

I'm kind of in the same boat here. Found some dots on him that didn't disappear after a bath.
I was going to a complete clean out anyway, so I baked/disinfected everything and switched to kitchen roll for 2 days. I use cork bark.. So it's a lot harder for me to tell if it's just dust or not.
When I examined him, none of the dots moved at all; and I checked him last night.. he seems to have quite dryish scales, and a few more dots.. But he is due a shed soon.
Keep an eye on him, and take action if you think wise.

Thanks :) But as he is growing and different coloured scales are popping up, he is sooo yellow!! And his saddles are getting a split of grey down them, so I think he's growing and the colour pigmentation is changing.
But the scales dont appear raised, and feed very smooth, Will be keeping an eye on him. Should I buy some mitekiller from my local rep?
As I am going stat shopping either sunday or monday, as finally, money is rolling in! |

I too have a mite problem. My snake shed this morning and I noticed ~7 of the little black pests left in the old skin.
I was going to find some mite-off and give him a wipe with it once a day when he's being handled (as I think I've still only got a small infestation). Secondly I was going to replace my substrate with kitchen roll and put in some fresh stuff every day.
Only thing I'm not sure about is what to do with the viv. itself. It's a small plastic one with all ceramic "furniture", so what's the best thing to do with it? |

I'd disinfect it with salmonella killing reptile disinfectant. I use cascade, and is in a spray squirty bottle and has a lizard on the front. Lol.
then rinse all the furniture and the rub with warm water and dry thoroughly. If problem persists, I'd get some special mitekiller.
I am going to do this if I keep spotting these black dots. Then if the black dots persist after the kitchen roll stage I'd buy some mite killer.
Just keep checking on him, as I'm doing with mine.
Anyone else out there, who can give any other advice? |

That spot has disappeared after examining.
His saddles ALWAYS seem to be changing, actually lee looking at Gypsy, It's like her scales. Half orange half brown, mine was half.. er.. grey and black, thats what I thought was a mite! Aha!. So, worrying has ceased. for now.
Frontline, doesn't that kill fleas for dogs or am I confused? As I MAY have some. |

It needs to be diluted and applied to the snake avoiding the head. I dont know what concentration though. |

So I would bathe him in diluted mite killer wotsit then? But I'd gently hold his head. Wouldn't let him go under, although, thank god for their several eye caps!!! |

You apply it on a cloth or tissue I think. |

I use the spray version for cats from the vets and a few sprays onto kitchen towel and wipe the snake down. Then spray the viv thoroughly too. |

Okay cheers guy - I'll bear that in mind. Hopefully, will never have to do that BUT just in case
All these spots on him are always changing. Just growing up I think, its pretty hard to spot a mite on an Anery. Lol I got confused with scales! |
