I have been reading all the posts on here about breeding and its made me start to think this is perhaps something I would like to try when Fred is old enough - she is 18mth at the mo and I think I read somewhere that its best they are about 3? Also I only have the one so how would I go about finding a mate as as much as I would like another corn I really dont have the space unless I give up on the beardie dream!!!!! |

You were right on the 3 thing as well, it's the rule of 3. 3 years old 3 feet long 300 grams weight.
That's what we'd recommend snakie at least be before trying to mate it.
And lke you say, obviously it's best if it female. |

well she certainly beats the 300gm rule - she weighs in at 580! As for lentgh I reckon she is about 3 and a half ft will tell better when she nexts sheds. As for sex, I was told that if I cant get her probed then I can use the amount of scales from her cloaca as a guide?! |

you can do a scale count but there's a bit of a grey area in the figures where it could be male or female. if you're in that grey area probably best to get an experienced person to probe him/her for you. i think next year we should have an 'At Stud' section........... Lewy!!!! |

580g at 18 months? - What are you feeding it?
As for studding, you would have to be very, very careful as you wouldn't have any quarantine period. |

Hi blackecho I was recommended by pet shop to feed her a large mouse every 5 days! I have now downsized to medium to large mice one of, every 7 days! Will monitor her weight and hopefully see a bit of a drop as the general consensus is she is a bit podgy!!! In my defence I was only doing as told!!! Wish I had found this place sooner! |

i'd continue to feed weekly but cut down the meal size. i'd also use being in shed/blue as an excuse to skip a feed. plenty of handling and the occasional swim will help get weight off. this should help her gradually slim down, try to weigh her every week or two to make sure she's not losing too much too quickly though, crash diets are never good! |

Hi GP, I'm fairly sure she is about that - I bought her in june 07, but then my brain kicks in and tells me that if its breeding season now she is probably nearer 2!!! She was only about 6-8in when I got her. Missed a feed last week as I had no mice, feeding a med/large mouse tonight as opposed to the large that she used to have. I weighed her yesterday, and she has dropped to 560gm, so its progress. I have been getting her out about 6 times a day these last couple of weeks - she must be sick of me going near her now poor thing, the bath thing was ok, til she realised she could actuall lay in the shallow end so now its a bit deeper!!! She isnt a great fan of moving when out and about so its perseverance now! Thanks for all your help, I will aim to get her weight down slowly but surely (a bit like mine really ) |

sounds like she was a hatchling when you got her so the age must be right. corns don't tend to appreciate huge amounts of space but sometimes a larger enclosure or even just adding some branches to your existing set up can encourage them to exercise themselves a bit more. having said that i've found my female corns eat and sleep and aren't particularly sociable, whereas the boys are often out and about. |

Have got a whole load of wood in there and some of those silk plants in there now along with 2 hides, both containing moss as she is very dry. She seems to be favouring the cool one lately but have guided her into the warm one as she had a feed tonight. Just a thought - got a new digi thermometer and I have put the probe above the heat mat and its reading 26.5celsius, I'm thinking thats because its still the smaller mat? The new one, bigger one, hasnt arrived yet, but is 20watt, I have a mat stat on and its set to 30celsius. On top of the mat I have an old thin frisbee, with the moss on and the heat gets through pretty well so its not stopping it, this is where I have the digi probe, and the mat stat probe I have underneath the frisbee! |

i'd ignore what you've got the stat set to and go by the reading on your digi thermometer, so crank it up a little |
