I'm really confused now! My corn has always been on a heat mat, and I was about to upgrade to an 11x11 with a mat stat but someone has just recommended that I get a ceramic heater to attach to the roof - a heat lamp I am assuming? Obviously if i chose this I would get a guard but I thought mats were ok?
More confused by the minute!

Mats are fine for corns- I would recommend a ceramic for larger bodied snakes or snakes that require higher ambient air temperature, but corns don't really need anything more than a mat (or a bulb) really.

thanks kazarella, I'm beginning to get grey hair over this! She has always been on a mat, and a new one with stat should be fine. Its just trying to get the temp variation right for her!

I've used a mat (on all the time) and a small bulb (only on in the day) for years and its been OK. However, my local shop has just persuaded me to use the heat lamp only on a dimming thermostat as it gives a better temperature control. I'm going to try it but to be fair I think you'll be alright with a mat so long as it gets the warm end to the right temp.

I have a heatmat on a matstat that is on at night mostly, and a 40 or 60w (I can't remember which) spotlight with guard that is on from 10.30am to 8.30pm and I get my temps pretty good (33c will be the absolute maximum)

(She's in a 3ft wooden viv; so the heatmat heats her hot end, and the bulb heats the ambient air throughout the viv :P)
