i have 2 carolina corn snakes that i was told when i bought them if i bred them together i would probably get some blood reds. i persume that one of the parents was blood red.

i dont know anything about genetics but, is the right term carolina het bloodred?

they are from the same clutch as far as im aware as i was told they were both september hatchlings, is it safe to breed them?

its going to be about 2 1/2 years till i allow them to breed as they are only 6months old.

I don't think I would breed two snakes from the same clutch, incest is never a good thing

but het bloodred does mean that they must have hidden bloodred genes, so you would get some bloodreds if you bred them.

You can breed 2 snakes from the same clutch.

And I could produce children with my sister, but would that be ok?

Sorry for what may seem a harsh response, but I just think I needed to put this across.

Likewise, if that was meant as a question, then apols for answering differently, but either way the question has been answered.

Inbreeding can cause all sorts of problems. Could you imagine spending £150 quid on a new snake and set-up, then having to spend an extra 100 quid every month because the snake needs extra medical treatment to keep it's liver/heart/lungs working?

Without in-breeding though, most of the morphs out there wouldn't be around.

First generation in-breeding does not seem to have any negative affect on reptiles, but 2nd generation does?

Inbreeding will only produce hatchlings with complications IF the siblings you breed together BOTH contain the same genetic fault passed down from their parents which will then display in some of their offspring.

You have normals het. blood.

Breeding normal het. blood x normal het. blood will produce:
- 75% Normals het. blood
- 25% Bloods

By blood I assume your talking about diffusion and not the selective bred form?

Good luck, bloods are great.

Wouldn't it be less risky to just "Borrow" someone elses snake for mating? The babies would certainly benefit from it.

In terms of what genetics classes have taught me, breeding with the parent is a better option then breeding siblings.
