Hi, I've just joined this forum today, so not sure of the ins and outs. I've had a look at some previous posts, which were really helpful!!
My male corn (Sizzle) is 2 1/2, I popped into a new reptile shop in town today and was propositioned, the owner offered to find me an adult female corn to breed with Sizzle...
I've wanted another corn for a while, but was worried about putting 2 in together. He says this is fine, and has offered to incubate the eggs after breeding, sell them and split the money.
My main worry is having to keep the male and female seperated... Will then need to live in seperate vivs all year? Or can I have them in together? Also do I need to seperate them before cooling them down? If so will they need a full size viv each?
Finally if I decide that I don't want to continue breeding them yearly, will keeping them in the same viv, at one temperature be possible, and will it put them off breeding?
Thanks, sorry for the mish mash of questions!!
Beth :-) |

If they are adults, it seems that the hazards of housing together are lessened, i.e they are less likely to eat each other as adults, but it's still personal choice really.
If you do, feed separately and put in as many hides as possible.
Don't know about the effects on breeding though.

i woudnt classify a 2 year old corn snake as an adult, mines 2 years old and under 4 foot long, i know they are sexually active and able to breed, but personally i recon that you will get better breeding results once the snakes are 4 years old and over 4 feet long. |

Oh right, I'm surprised about that, everything else I read said it was a rule of 3s? By the time I come to breed Sizzle he will be almost 4, and at the moment he is between 3 1/2 and 4 ft...
Is this not the right age and size for breeding? the more I read the more confused I get! Lol.
Thanks,
Beth x |

the 3 rule means: 3 years old 3 foot long 300g
this it what everybody says the ideal age, length and weight a snake should be to breed safely without risking the snakes health, although im not really sure if this applies to males but it definately applies to females as they are the ones that carry the eggs and the "3 rule" reduces the risk of egg binding that can result in serious helth issues and even death. |

Males can be a little bit younger, but not too small. It would be too daunting to go tackle a female that's loads bigger than him |

OK, apart from those issues (he will be 3 and he is already 4 ft long), my main question is whether he can live with the female all year round, or if they will need to be seperated...? |

That's really personal choice. Some people do co-habit their corns, but a lot of people don't just to avoid problems. |
