i have noticed that corn snakes can breed with many other types of rat snakes/colubrids. i wonder why that is? i know they are very closely related to grey rat snakes, black rat snakes/yellow rat snakes and everglades rat snakes they was once in the same genus but as scientists keep changing things around and dont know how to leave things alone i would disagree with what they have lately done and still call them all "elaphe". anyway back to the topic- would anyone know why a corn snake is so compatable with other rat snakes? wat about the hybrid offspring? would they be fertile and able to produce like a new species of their own? i know many people are against hybridations and call it playing god, but what if a male corn snake come across say a grey rat snake in the wild and it was the breeding season? that would occur naturally. s |

I think they are compatable because they have the same number of chromosomes per cell. This is down to them being closly related, in the same way as a donky and zebra (was mention in a zoo thread).
King x corn hybrids are infertile, but im not sure about rat x corn.
Im not against it, I think its interesting to see the results. However I wouldnt like to see it become a big thing (such as like boas). |

Haven't a lot of the current colour/pattern morphs available today come from slectively breeding with various rat snakes. Then over time and more selective breeding the rat snake is eventually bred out of the line leaving predominantly corn snake genes but with the colour/pattern traits.
That's how I understood all these morphs came about anyway. I stand to be corrected though. |

o i didnt know that certain colour morphs are made by introducing other rat snakes species? i know that creamsicle involves the corn snakes closest cousin the great plains rat snake. but surely then all these colour morphs being made by introducing other rat snake species, then surely they are not pure corn? :o |

also coz corns are so easily to be mated with other rat snakes, wouldnt it be a good thing to have rat snake dna in the blood line to make the corns grow to their maximum size? as grey rat snakes for example get huge compared to basic corn snakes. |

I don't know- because Trilby has got rat snake blood in her and she's massive. We struggled to get medicine inside her when she needed it. It was a two man job. I prefer handling Cyd because she's the same age but normal corn size. |

She's 6ft 2 and 1320grams and that's after she's been on a diet. When we got her she weighed 148ograms. She was obese |
