Ok so I'm just wondering.. how much force does a snake exert when its adult and tags an adult rat? Need to keep this in mind for mine when they get bigger

dont think any one can answer that! its enough force to squeeze all the air out of its prey and possibley break a few bones!! not sure it would be enough to hurt a human though
how old is your snake? is that a recent pic? |

I cant tell you a number, but its more than people think. If an large adult constricted around your neck, I think it could kill you if left to do so, but you would be able to pull it off (very unlikly to happen).
Also rats arnt needed to feed corns. |

Its difficult to say without an experiment. Ive seen some TV shows with vipers measure the force but I cant remeber off my head what the figure was, sorry. |

They dont really hit it very hard because they arnt trying to push the prey away from them. Once they have struck and have a grip on the mouse, they pull it back towards them. |

Hm, thing is, my flatmate is a media student, and he's gonna get hold of a high frame rate video camera and gonna tape Astra next time she feeds.. I'll put it up on youtube if anyones interested, but that might shed some light on the subject. It might be a while though, my snakes in the blue. |

nah my corn snake is no adult, hes only 2 years old and still under 4 feet long, may look big in my videos but i have seen and handled adults and they are giants compared to him. |

Apparently corns don't constrict to crush, only to suffocate and hold onto prey to stop it moving and get there gob over it's head. |

Thats true. No snake intends to brake bones, it just ends up that way sometimes. |

Ok, here comes a bit of science babble
The equasion for working out how much something has worked is (where Work=W, Distance=D and Force=F) W=F*D.Therefore working out force would be F=W/D. As we need to know the work first to do this, and to know the work we need the force, we cant work out the force yet.
We can, however, work out the speed of the strike. The equasion (where Speed=S, Distance=D and Time=T) is S=D/T. At a distance of about 8cm, Maurice took 0.98 seconds to reach the mouse (He is not fully grown, but I will use him as an example). So puting that into the equasion makes S=8/0.98. This means he travled at 8.16cm/S.
Now we can work out the acceleration of the snake. The equasion is (where Acceleration=A, Final speed=F, Starting speed=S and Time=T) is A=F-S/T. So A=8.16-(aprox)1/0.98. This makes the acceleration of the snake 7.3cm/S.
This means we can do the other means of calculating force, (Where Force=F, Mass=M and Acceleration=A), F=M*A. Maurice ways about 125g I think, so that means that F=125*7.3. Therefore the force of the strike is 912.5 grams.
So for My snake its 912.5g. Hope that helped

8.16Cm/S, as above.
Sorry to go all in depth, got a free period at school and nothing to do |
