He or she's been set up in my room for less than 24 hours, still needs a name
I'd imagine its been quite a journey (3 hours by car) and its understandably stressed, picked it up a few times but wondering how long before it'll become used to being handled and less scared of me and how often I should handle to get it used to me?
Oh and heres a few pictures..

Lovely looking, what type is he/she, well from my research 5-7days is best to leave them to get settled in, also maybe put a small item of clothing in the viv so they get used to your smell, i made a little hide out of a glove and a toilet tube.
Oh and welcome |

Nice snake. Agree with Nipnosis, best leave him alone for a few days, ideally a week, to settle in. It's tempting when you have a new pet to want to handle them but patience will pay off they say! After that, little and often with the handling and he should get used to you and settle down. Got my Corn Snake 2 monnths ago and he would get very wriggly when I handled him at first but now he is getting a bit calmer and soon settles down once out of the viv.
You ideally should not handle your snake for the first 24-48 hours after feeding them or when they are about to shed their skin (as their eyes go all milky and their eyesight is very poor at that time so handling stesses them out).
Good luck with him.
PS I would not feed them for 5 or so days either. |

Hey, a big thanks for all of the advice, taken on board :)
He/She now has a name, Marmite... which my house mate has objected to as she wanted it to be called porn snake ha ha
Oh and its an Anery as far as I know.

Out of curiosity, what's her length? at best guess. Also, did you get him/her from a shop or friend etc? |

Must be just over a foot I think. Got him from a shop.
Thanks Jac, going to leave him for a few days now, was really jumpy last night. Think I just need to be patient! A freind has one and I was happily holding him wrapped around my hand the other day, so hopefully mine will get the same way over time |

Did you ask them in the shop to sex it? Most shops should do it, i would've thought that they would have let you know. If you'd like to know for sure, bring her/him back to ANY reptile shop and ask them to do it. If she's still small they'll probably pop it, but either way you'll know for sure. |

Thanks, I'll have to get around to getting Marmite sexed!
Just an update, left Marmite for 2 days and handled him earlier, was much happier, still twitchy but content, just held him for a minute.
Now to my surprise I just caught him at the TOP of my viv, wow, talk about curious and excellent escape artists! Is this normal, just exploring or bored? Would Marmite be happier with say 3 of the walls covered up with habitat posters?
Viv, moments before Marmite fell down, oops! Edit: he keeps going up there and falling down

They always try and escape. It's their favourite thing to do
Now that we've got Jally back, we've took extra precautions to stop her escaping again. We've got her faunarium inside a spare viv, so if she manages to get out of that, she'll have another to worm her way out of.
Still not confident though. They can get were water can't |

I have a similar viv but not as tall and Angelina is always around the top like marmite is in the pics, i think they just get curious! Its scary when you cant see them in the viv then you notice them in the lid, lol! |

you need to put a thermo at each end of the critter cage, closer to the substrate. This will give a more accurate reading of the temps at each end. the one on the back of the critter cage in the pic is only measuring the temp of the back 'wall'. |
