I want to light my viv as it's quite dark and to do it cheaply. If I use one of those coiled energy bulbs would I need to put it in a protective cage?

i did with mine although there not likely to get burnt from energy saving bulbs as they give over vertually no heat

I've just put one of those in my Viv, and it gets hot.
Whether or not I've got a dodgy bulb or not I don't know. It's not as hot as a normal bulb, but I can't keep my hand on it for more than about 10 seconds.
I'll try a different bulb later, just in case.

We've got energy saving ones in the house so I've just left one on and touched it and you're right they do get hot.

Hm, I have 8 watt ones and they do get quite hot. As was said, not as hot as normal ones, but best put a guard on them just to be safe =)

Didn't realise how expensive guards were to buy! less than a £1 for the bulb and then £20 for a guard!

If you can put your hand on the lamp for 10 secs even half that without burning your self, wouldn't the snake also not touch it for long enough to hurt its self? i haven't got a guard didn't see the point, with incandescent lamps that easily get hot enough to burn on contact you wouldn't get a warning.

They dont recognise heat in the same way we do. They dont realise that what they are touching is burning them.

I have a 16w under cupboard light from Wickes in Lilas viv. It does get quite hot but the lamp is very close to the top of the viv and there is no way she can wrap around the tube or get above it. Even if she reached up and touched it, she couldn't possibly be in contact with it for longer than a couple of seconds.

Is there any lighting aside from those stick on LED ones (that i don't want) that doesn't get hot? I wouldn't mind LED if it was mains powered but I looked round B&Q today and they don't sell anything like it.

Has anyone never used Cold cathode tubes in their vivs?
I used some about 3 years ago, cheap as chips (compared to bulb and guard) AND they are like the name, Cold.
They let off no heat AT ALL, but are still nice and bright, look at a local 'boy-racer' meet and you'll see loads, or on case-modding sites.

Downside is, they are very fragile and run on 12 volts

Example here, but they could probably be found cheaper if there was some hunting around done.

Yeah pets at home do them in the fish section, you buy a hub and then can choose either white, red, blue or green lighting to add. The lights themselves are waterproof so no issues if snakey poos on them and they dont make any heat.
Problem is , is that I think they are around £14 or so for the hub and about £3 each light.

In regards to the potential burns from lights, the Cali King I just got, Thanks Wolfspirit, has got what looks like quite severe burns to his tail.

I'll try to get a couple decent pics of it to show you.
Wolfspirit showed me the viv he was 'kept' in, and it had a standard candle style bulb unguarded inside the viv, it looks like where he got his burns from. Poor keeping.

Check on Ebay. Is it the Hagen Marina LED light that you are talking about? If so there is a guy on there that does them dirt cheap.
