I have 18 month old corn very new to me and trying to learn quickly how to look after/feed etc. I have witnessed a shedding (How amazing) all went well with a clean full shed. I have got large mice and was told to feed every 5-6 days but they seem very small. The corn seems very active when hungry and after first feed i left for 2 days then it came out of viv and had apoopon my sofa!!! she was very excited again and searching as if looking for food especially when back in viv so i gave her another mouse, they are no bigger than her girth so should i get some bigger mice (jumbo's) is it? . Ive measured the corn at about 4 feet (1200mm)long and 4 1/4 inches (110mm) around the belly. really not sure what sex it is, is there any markings that can tell me |

at 18 months old there's no way it's 4ft, so either your tapemeasure is wrong or (more likely) she's at least twice the age you've been told she is!
for adult corns feeding approximately every 7 days for females and 14 days for males is good, providing the size of the prey item is appropriate. different places will grade their mouse sizes slightly differently, so for example what one place might call a large mice, another might call a medium mouse and vice versa. so go on the girth of the snake, the mouse should be the same as, or no bigger than 1.5 times the girth of the snake. |

As for sexing- the only accurate way is to have her probed by a reptile specialist or vet. That means that they will stick a small metal instrument into the genital cover and they will be able to tell you if it is male or female.
Most good reptile shops will do it for free if you can find one.
There is another way, which isn't as accurate but works if you are only mildly interested. Check the tail. If it is quite dumpy and short then your snake is more likely to be female. Males have narrower, long tails. I have successfully sexed snakes in this way, but I've got the advantage of having a 100% definite male to compare to. Otherwise it would be quite difficult. |

Hi, I really appreciate any help/advice and will listen. My tape measure is definatley ok, it's the one i use for work as a builder!!! How old would you say it was then at a length of just over 4 feet?
A friend of a friend got the snake just over a week ago but has since been sectioned and i wanted to make sure the snake was looked after so i went to the shop for information and was told it was 18 months old and given a care sheet and that was all, so here i am and here is Nagini. I will try on larger mice i can get them in single or packs of 10 localy. Thanks again for you advice |

in the pic i see you measured the shed skin. thats not an accurate way of measuiring your snake as the shed can be longer than the actual snake by as much as 7inches which is just over half a foot |

At a guess I would say 3.5 years old. Its a decent length (It will be under 4' because the skin streches as it comes off), but is still brighly coloured (corns colour seems to darken with age). |

i'd say 3-4 years depending on it's start in life. if you're measuring the shed skin take off 10% to allow for stetching and that gives you an estimate length. just from the pic i'd say it was male. |

Hi, as others have said, a shed skin will usually be at least 10% longer than the snake, sometimes as much as 20%. |
