Our corn has been on 2 pinkies for a while now and even after 2 pinkies there wasn't much of a lump left after he'd eaten and he would usually be still prowling for more food, so I decided to try him with a fuzzy.
The fuzzy is quite a bit bigger than the pinkies he was on, but not so big that they looked much wider than him, but he's taking quite a long time to get it down - he's got as far as the hind legs in about 20 minutes - is this ok?
I'm sure I read they only tried to take prey that would 'go down' so hopefully he'll be ok, but I wasn't sure if the length of time it was taking him to swallow it would cause a problem...
Cheers

as a general guide the prey item should be no more than 1.5 times the width of the snake's body at the widest point. corns will attempt (and sometimes manage) food that is incredibly large, the risk of feeding an over-sized prey item is that it turns rancid in the gut before the snake can fully digest it. this can cause regurgitation and associated problems. BUT, at the end of the day, it's only a fuzzy, I'm sure he'll be fine neil |

Chances are it will be fine as long as the temps are good. |

Dusk sometimes take ages also with fuzzies, he seems to have issues getting the paws down as they hug his head when he's swallowing. He always digests them fine though so Im sure yours will be ok ^^ |

Thanks guys, I know it sounds stupid but I couldn't sleep last night worrying about him. Got a text at 3:45am from a friend who'd just become a dad, so jumped up and went and checked on snakey!
He's got a huge lump, he looks quite stretched, and this morning he was draped over his branch (usually he hides away after he's eaten for a day or so), and tonight he was in his plastic ivy with his head out looking at us when I checked just now, so I think he's ok, but I thought it was strange that he was more active after a bigger meal. |

It's now nearly 3 days since he ate and his lump is still pronounced... is this ok? |

If he hasnt brought it back up its an ok sign, however it is proof that he's been fed a food item too big as the bulge should usually be gone 24-48 hours after.
He should be fine, just leave him while he digests it in case he regurges and perhaps up the temps to help him digest it faster. |

Thanks for the advice! Temps upped, and left him alone for 5 days instead of 2.
Had him out last night and the lump was gone and he seemed fine (hasn't poo'd yet, but I'm sure he will!) - he even hid up my sleeve for 10 minutes with his head sticking out, he's a nosy bugger :)
I'll leave him for a couple more days and then go back to 2 pinkies instead of a fuzzy - I'm sure he'll be onto fuzzies in a month or two...
One last question - would you feed 3 pinkies if 2 don't leave a bulge, or just go up to fuzzies which leave a huge bulge? |

Great news that he's ok and digested it fine ^^ I would feed 3 pinkies as they are easier to digest and he had problems with the fuzzie. |

You would be suprised what they can take! A few weeks ago we moved ember to fuzzies, but it turns out we fed him a rat pup.... took him 1 hour to take it.... |

food sizes and names do change around the country a rat pup around me looks a lot like a fluff but with a bigger head and skin like a pinkie, where as the rat that is the same size as a large mouse is sold as a weaner rat, i will try and take some pics and we should start a thread, also has anybody noticed that large mice you get today are alot smaller than 18 months ago, my local shop has commented on this and cannot get jumbos for love nor money |
