This morning I was very happy to see that James has shed his skin (first time with us since we got him), and that it looks to be intact (and has the tail-tip) - only the head bit looks frayed, but I suppose that could have been done as he was working out of it?
I had a quick look at him and he looks fine, but I really don't know what to look out for - there are no obvious patches of skin or anything like that on his head, but how would I know if his eye scales have successfully come off or not?
I uploaded a picture of his skin here if that helps: http://www.hencam.co.uk/images/trevors_stay/james_skin.jpg
I didn't want to pick him up or disturb him too much as he only ate very late last night...
Thanks!

look at the head bit of ur snakes skin and u shud be able to see the eyecaps on it. but in ur pic the head bit looks destroyed so look at ur snakes eyes. is there any flaky bits on it? if ur not sure take a pic of each of ur snakes eyes and post it. the main thing to worry about is shed on the eyes and tail tip. i always love it when my snake sheds in 1 piece and it undamaged as its a perfect shed |

Ok thanks. I only had a quick glimpse of him this morning but his eyes looked ok though I need to check properly - but that will have to wait until tomorrow as he only fed last night.

Try an check the eyes and tail after every shed. Left over shed on the tail can be bad if left on but a good soak in the bath should get rid of any left over shed on your snake, i usually bathe Angelina after her shed and then dry her in a towl so any loose skin comes off. Hope thats helps abit |

Like previously said, the eye caps and tail are some of the most important parts, also quite likely to go wrong if the conditions aren't right.
Check the eyes very closely to make sure there's nothing left on those, also with the tail. It should be obvious if there is any left on, especially round the edges of the eyes.
If there is any left on, a good long soak in a luke warm shallow bath and then letting him wriggle through a towel normally does the trick.
There are more extreme and therefore contraversial methods but they don't need mentioning unless any left over shed hasn't either come off after the bath or after his next shed. |

Like mulv has said, you will see a grey outline on the edge of the eyes if your snake has retained an eye cap. |

But is it okay to check James if he was only fed last night - we don't want to risk a regurge?? Is it safe to leave him for two days before checking his eyes, or should we check his eyes now and risk stressing him out after his feeding? Thanks for the help |

In my opinion, a quick peek won't hurt, just don't pick him up or spook him too much. |

As it's nearly been 2 days since he fed, I took him out and cleaned his tank, and I found this:
so that was a relief!
I notice he has two tiny bits of flaky skin (like about 1 scale size) near the base of his tail, but I presume they'll come off as he moves around? The shed skin looked complete other than that.
He was really skittish though today - any reason why that would be?

If it was me I would remove the tail scales. Get a bit of damp kitchen roll and move it down the snakes body near the tip of the tail. Do the same with a dry peice and it should come away easy enough. |

Good to hear the head is sorted!
If the tail bit doesn't come off with Matty's method, and you can't get it off at all it might be best to wait til the next shed to clear it all, rather than stress him out by pestering him. Either way, if it isn't off after the next shed you need to get it off. |
