i have a wooden vivarium that houses a year old corn snake. just wondering though whhat way is the best way to heat the viv. a heat lamp or a heat mat? and how could i go about controlling the temperature, is there a device which controls what temp the heat mat/lamp stays at?

The most used method is a heat mat with either a Pulse thermostat or a Mat thermostat.

Yep, the heat mat can be controlled by the thermostat but you will need a digital thermometer to check the temps. Your aiming for 27-30*C on the hot side and 21-23 on the cool side. It stays that way all year round (except if breeding but that a differant thing all together).
