Try to get the thermometer inside the viv on the heat mat, that'll give you an accurate temp reading.
I have my hot end temps at around 28-30c, and my cold from about 20-23.
My temps do fluctuate a fiar bit though due to other things around them.

check temp on top of substrate at hot end as ya snake will be on the substrate not the mat, ya still better off to get a thermostat though and also get a digital thermometer than ya can leave in all the time that records min an max temps |

Thermostats are invaluable to reptile keepers as heat mats have been known (despite many safety precautions) to overheat and either kill or badly maim peoples pets.
I would therefore say it would be a good idea to get one as a safety precaution if anything, not to mention they help save electricity by turning off the mat when it reaches a certain temp. |

Should have been more clear about that, as opposed to take reading from on top of mat.
Cheers for clearing that up a33272. |

hes another question to do with heat, an a heat mat be used with a pulse prop thermostat reason i ask is my warm end temp has a min of 25 an a max of 29.7 but like it to stay a bit more stable which i just dont seam to be able to get with a standard thermostat |

pulse prop stats are ideal for mats and ceramic heater but no good for lamps as they will make a lamp flicker on and off.hth |

Pulse's are more accurate than mat stats. If your temps are a bit wobbly then its worth getting one. |

i spoke to the guys at habistat direct, with this exact question. answer as follows. Pulse proportional stats are perfect for use with heat mats and control and a much closer temperature range. these are what they use for their snakes. the temp probe for the stat should be placed close to the surface of the mat. they attach theirs to the surface of the mat with silicon sealant. A digital thermometer should then be placed on the hottest surface the snake can get to. if the mat is inside the viv the thermometer should be placed directly on its surface. the readings from this thermometer should then be used to control the temp of the viv, this is due to inaccuracies in the stat markings. |
