Hi, im hoping to be getting a corn snake soon ^.^ its going to be my frist snake so i have a couple of newbie questions about feeding.
Fistly, ive seen you guys suggest using things like cat litter trays to feed the snake (to avoid digestion of substrate). My question is if i remove the snake from the heated viv for feeding, is there a risk of the snake cooling down too much?
Secondly, i know that snakes are not suppose to be handled for at least 42 hours after feeding, to allow it to digest the food. But wont i have to move the snake to place it back in the viv?
Thanks a bunch, Dean

There are those that think you should feed out of the viv but if you put some paper towel down or the food on some kind of plate then that would prevent ingestion of any substrate.
I know they can refuse food if the temps aren't high enough for proper digestion so we've always fed in the viv with no problem (yet!) Also ours is quite secretive still about eating and likes to be left alone, so you'd need a second secure container in this case.
If you do feed outside, then moving the snake back to the tank doesn't really count as handling, as long as you do it gently, preferably by putting the feed container in the tank and let the snake make it's own way back. |

The snake wouldnt cool down that fast, and as for putting them back into the viv, thats fine also. Just dont cause the snake to have to bend, curl or twist unnessisarily. |

like Kaz and matty said, the time it takes a corn to eat it won't have cooled down significantly enough to create a problem, and returning them to their viv is literally just picking them up and placing them in their viv with no bending, wriggling or action! |

Feeding out side the viv also means they aint gonna mistake your fingers for food each time you put you hand in the viv!! Feed them in in a tray or RUB (really useful box) no substrate to munch on and you get a better view of them eating too. ;-) Plus every corn i've ever met eats too quick to get cold anyway. It doesnt have to be expensive or flash just clean, in my experiance if a corn doesn't feed within a couple of minutes it isn't going too. |
