Hi everyone,
I spent most of a very enjoyable slow work day reading through the forum and have picked up so much helpful info so I thought I should register and say thank you.
My 18 year old daughter recently got a corn snake after researching their care, and they are amazing little snakes aren't they!
We had a bit of a scare the day after we got him as he regurged but we think we traced it to his heatpad been on a glass table and the table was acting as a huge heatsink drawing the heat away from him.
He's taken his next two pinkies fine, so hopefully he's ok now.
Just one question: our heat pad is 13.5 watt, and it seems to struggle keeping the temps up - would a 22 watt heat pad be better?
We also bought a thermostat as well as we don't want to risk the temps going too high (if they ever do!) |

Hello
If the temps are struggling you could move up a heat mat, but you've got to be careful it doesn't take up more than a third of the floor space. Your snake needs to move about to thermo-regulate.
Have you tried upping the temp on the thermostat? They aren't very accurate, so even if you have it set to 30 degrees it doesn't mean it'll regulate perfectly at that. Up the temp if you can and adjust accordingly by reading the thermometers. |

If you can get a nice thin piece of polystyrene under the heatmat with the viv on top, this will reflect heat back in, so your 13watt one should be fine, depending on the size of the viv.
Where are you located? (town)

It's a faunarium (I had to look that up!)
He's on the new heat-mat and stat. I need to get a decent thermometer though as I only have one of those LCD strip ones stuck to the inside of the tank about 1 inch up.
I'll try and pick up a decent thermometer in the next day or so (can you use aquarium ones?) - will have a trip to Tyrannosaurus Pets in Leeds at the weekend (I'm based between Bradford / Keighley).
I got some foam board from work so there is now a layer of tin foil, then 2 layers of foam board, then the heat mat and his tank. The bottom of the glass table is only getting lukewarm now whereas before it was hot so I know it's not leeching all his heat anymore! |

Sounds good, and aquarium thermometers with probes are fine |
