Has anyone on here got a tortoise?

Jo really likes them and I was thinking of getting her a late Xmas prezzie. I had a Hermann's when I was a kid but that was back in the 70s/80s when we used to keep them in the garden and he used to hibernate in the flowerbed. Oh, the days of 70s ignorance .

We have a 3ft viv (sorry Nutzyjazz. If she goes for it I'm gonna have to let you down on the viv.), 100w basking lamp, UVB tube and fittings, heat mat, etc.

Any advice that anyone has or if you can spot anything that we've missed we would appreciate it if you let us know.

Cheers in advance .

They've got them at the local rep store at the moment. They're about the size of a tennis ball!!!

I've heard they are quite boring, but never kept one myself so don't know for sure.

Ignore me!

P.s though...

Don't they eat weeds? about the same amount of weeds daily as the size of their shells?

Hope you've a lot of dandelions in your garden

Sorry. What? I wasn't listening .

The one I had when I was a kid used to run (yes I know it's hard to believe but he used to run at our walking pace) around the garden, attack any cats that used to enter the garden, and climb about in my parents rockery. He was fun.

The new one is gonna live in a viv though. If we put it in the garden it would either get stolen or eaten by rats (we have a bit of an issue with brown rats in Portsmouth at the moment ).

They sold off a load of the land/empty buildings that belonged to the Royal Navy but forgot to deal with the rats that were living there, so they just spread out into the city. Fantastic !

Get the council to hire the Pied Piper!

(if your very lucky they won't pay him and you'll get rid of the annoying, smelly little people too )

i have 3 hermanns. And yes they do run! lol.
i don't find them boring at all. i even find that each one has their own personality.
i keep them in an indoor rabbit cage with a basking lamp and uv light. And in the summer, when we have nice days, i take it outside, the cage top stops any cats or birds getting to them. Although i bring it back inside in the evening.
