it's very likely to be pine-based, meaning it's toxic to snakes although some tolerate it better and for longer than others it can cause skin/scale problems and respiratory infections. |

It is pine based compacted sawdust pellets. I use those in my chinchilla's cage. Fine for him but I definately wouldn't recommend it for a snake as substrate. |

Sorry Brit, as above. Some woods such as Pines/Firs & Cedar are known to be toxic to snakes. |

if so, he could have ingested a pellet of the substrate, and he's VERY lucky if he's passed it through his system! |

erm... not sure, but I don't think sawdust is the best option either... We use tortoise bedding for our corn which looks a little like yours but is large pellets and shredded aspen for my hoggie. I believe a lot of people on here use aspen, or just good old fashioned paper as its easier to clean.
I think one of the problems with sawdust is the dust causing respiritary infections, and the possibility that some of the shavings may be a toxic wood... not sure - someone else be able to tell you more. J |

We don't think you are thick Brit Chick we are just trying to give you advise.
Pine is toxic to snakes so if the saw dust you are using is pine based then it's not good. We use aspen, but like Jennet says, paper will do.
