im eager to get my first snake. Would it be best for me to get a hatchling or an older snake? I have some experience with adult corn snakes (i do some voulentary work at a zoo/farm near were i live and im regularly in contact with the snakes). I have no experience with hatchlings. Any advice would be great!

I dont think that there is a definitive answer to that question. My first was a hatchling but i`ve now got two more that are a year old, it all comes down to the adult snake and what sort of history as it had i.e. does it eat well, shed well and handle regular at least with a baby you get to know it from early on, but a happy adult will also be great. Just get one but be aware more WILL follow.

I would advise getting a yearling if your not sure.

They are more settled with their feedings than an hatchling is, but still young enough to watch it grow and develope into an adult.

Plus hatchlings need to be kept in a faunarium or rub, where yearlings and older can live in vivs, which look nicer

as long as you get a hatchling from a good shop or breeder feeding shouldnt be a prob. but as Kazerella said if you are abit worried maybe a yearling would be a good choice.

yearlings are a better choice especially if you know their history

Thanks for the advice. my mums mate has a corn snake which her sons have lost interest in. She has mentioned i could have a "long term loan" of it so i will ask her again. im pretty sure its about 3/4 years old.

I'd like to congratulate you matty, Well done for joining a board, and asking questions before getting one.
No doubt you have also been looking up on the interweb about keeping them.
So many people just get one, without knowing anything about them.
Good luck on finding a suitable snake.
Remember one thing, that you may not have been told yet:

just got the snake and will get pics on sunday. look back and you will see i said she was 3/4 years old....turns out shes older than god himself (13!). But, to be honest, the age doesnt bother me (that rule is applied to alot of my life :P) The previous owner (my mums mate) wasnt the best of owners and the snake seems under weight (spine sticking out slighly) so i will feed her more reguarly. The viv is unfortunatly very small (just over 2ft with 4ft snake) but since the snake has been in there all her life i wont change it. I was worried about taking such an old snake but i was reasuringly told that if she was to kick the bucket a tad early the origional owner would not be to overwelmed and distraught.

Youve def done the right thing Matty, sounds like she needs abit of loving and some tlc. Which i'm sure you can give her and nurse her back to good health. We only had our first snake a week and both me and jaz were disraught, cant imagine how id feel after 13 years.
Good luck matty.

started making a new viv this morning. its made from peices of flat pack furniture (mainly chipboard). I have just finished cutting all the peices to size. I have also used a section of a curtain pole and some of the rings on it which i will screw into the ceiling. i am goin out to buy a sheet of glass, some substrate, heat mat, light fitting and some skirting board on monday to finish the job. i will get pics of the finished product. The peices have been sitting in my garage for a week. Should i disinfect it all after it has been assembled?
