Okies.. so Sirius shed a couple of days ago and I noticed that he didn't have is usual 'super shiny' look afterwards which made me think perhaps he was just zooming straight into another shed (he seems to start dulling three weeks before actually shedding) but I'm not sure if this is possible.
When I was handling him yesterday I also noticed some of his scales looked a little bit strange.. kinda 'dimpled' or creased. Its a small patch (about 1 cm) and to be honest it just looks dry or as if the scales are deflated. Its also only on one side so I wondered if he was just too fat and his scales were squishing when he curls up?
Am I over feeding him? he's been eating less the last couple of weeks (1 pinkie rather than 2) but I put that down to the cold.. but now I wonder if he is on a self imposed diet!! |

Hmm.. the forum won't let me edit - he's almost 50cm long now and about as thick as a normal pepperami round the middle (can't think of anything else to compare him to right now..)The temps are ok but a bit colder than normal on the cool side. He has a humid hide, his shed was ok.. meh. Can't think of any more details.. |

I don't have a camera that'll take pics that close up they just look a wee bit shrivelled.. pruned maybe? Can it be dehydration? Do scales shrivel? It doesn't seem to bother him I just want to know I haven't done anything stupid.. I'll keep scouring the internet for help |

Ok.. these obviously aren't his scales, but they kinda look like a less dramatic version of this... very less dramatic with only slight indentations.. and some just look like little bends..
Incidentally the place on the web I found this is an article on dimpling in snakes.. of which there is no known cause.. however the dimples they are talking aout cover the whole snake and sirius only has a teeny patch. It might go away in his next shed, but he seems in excellent health apart from this so I have decided not to worry if it spreads I will pop him to a rep vet in case it is some kind of virus or skin condition.
If anyone has any ideas or has seen dimples on their snakes I'd still be interested though! |

Cheers Paulus, that would be handy. What do you do that puts you in such a place? Veterinary student? |

Forensic Biologist....nearly specialising in Forensic Entomology.
I think the logic is that the subjects are already dead so lets wheel out the really nasty chemicals. |

Woah!Crazy profession! Nice Entemology is becoming increasingly interesting to me.. I think its having a good supply of live food in the house at all times.. plus the scorpions are super interesting (yeah, yeah.. I know that they don't really come under 'entemology' but.. well.. I'm as amateur as they come!!).
I think I've had too much David Attenborough... |

Has its moments, but it can be upsetting if you see the victims as people. Sounds a little cold-hearted but I would spend every night in tears or become an alcoholic if I handled it any differently. Not had to attend a real life scene, but some of the case studies we look at are pretty horrendous. Did a mock up of a murder scene with a dummy the other week. That was pretty cool.
I haven't had to buy any food for my mantid for ages. Just collect a sample tube full of bluebottles from my colony when she needs feeding. |

*ewwwwww* I HATE flies. Flies are wrong. But their crazy little sub wing gyroscope thingies are cool. But I hate them.
Yeah, I would imagine seeing victims as people woud really screw you up.. I did think about doing it for a while but didn't think I would be able to be that detached and preferred more arty things anyway.. Do you get to wear funny plastic boiler suits? |

We do a full blown crime scene next semester. Police cordon, suited up, Gene Hunt, etc. It's gonna be great. |

The worst dissection I had to do was in my 1st year. It was a squid. No problem doing it but when it had been sat on the bench for 2 hours, lets just say that I needed to go outside. I'm in my final year doing my project and some units. Forensic Medicine is pretty interesting. All bones, wounds, rigor mortis and stuff. That sounds so wrong when I read it. I sound like an absolute sicko, but I'm not. Honest!!!! |

I've disected a fox's head, one of its front legs, a lamb's head. I have done a pig heart at sixth form, and im due to do a pigs breathing system in two weeks i think.
Were a strange bunch |

I remember doing a cow's breathing bits (stop me if I get too scientific) at school. My friend got his fingers stuck down its windpipe. What are you studying Matt?
