Hello.. im Aly.. i have a Amel cornsnake.. male i think... only bought him other day, but they said he was a sub adult.. no idea how old that means!!!
Currently he is tucked up in my hoodie pocket as its nice and warm!!! such a friendly critter!!!

Anyway.. questions.....
sorry theres a few...

Ive attached some pictures... he was sold to me as a Amel cornsnake.. is this correct?? all the other pics ive seen on amels.. they have a bit of white.. he has next to none....
Please could someone take a look????

and also i bought a viv for him.. have also added pic of that, and have kitted it out.. and have a heat mat under one side.. but the temp doesnt seem to be going up at all. and he feels cold.... hence why hes now in my hoodie....
it was a heat mat that the pet shop advised me to use... and they sold me the viv too, so dont know why its not working.. it says 20 degrees in there... dropped to 18 last night :O
what can i do?? and what am i doing wrong???

Also 3rdly (and lastly) i would like to find a anelistic motley or stripe... i live in paignton in devon.. anyone know any breeder around me who might have one???
there was a lady Roslyn thati thnk had one but not sure where she is in UK.... and what she sells them for???

thanks in advance,
Aly x

Nice snake. There are a few minor problems with your set-up, but they are easily sorted out.

The thermometer on the wall of the viv needs to be at the level of the substrate (flooring), if not lying on it. Otherwise it wont read the temperature that the snake is in contact with.

If that doesnt show the correct temperature, you can reduce the thinkness of the substrate. You have quite a big layer and not all of it is needed (however im not too sure because there is nothing to compare its thickness with).

Also you havent said if you have a thermostat. You need one to control the heatmat and prevent the possibility of it over heading and cooking the snake.

Sorry, but I can't tell the Morph, the colour in the pictures isn't great. Has it got red eyes?

As Matty says, the temperature needs to be measured where the snake is, i.e. on the substrate, digital thermometers much better and you can pick Aquarium ones up on ebay for a couple of pounds.

Also, it looks like you have a good couple of inches of wood substrate which is a great insulator and will stop the heat getting through. 1cm should be plenty.

Hi and welcome Aly!

First off are you using a digital thermometer to measure the temps? As those dial ones (which i can see half way up your viv wall) are notoriusly bad - mines always 10 degress out). It would be best to put the thermometer on the substrate, as this is where the snake would be laying.

You may also want to cover all 3 sides of you viv, as then your corn wont feel so insecure of his massive new world!

Snakes are cold blooded, and as our body temp is 37.5C they will always feel cold to us, and us hot to them i should imagine!

I cant advise on the morph, but he is a beauty, gorgeous colours

I know i havent provided alot of help, but im sure somoebody (BE or GP ) will be along shortly.

my snaky likes to bury herself down in the substate at mo, so il prob just reduce it slowly as i spot clean it... lol.

thanks emma.
what can i cover it with??? or just a sheet???

i dont have a digital one... but im thinking of investing in one.. i have a biorb one that i never used for my fish tank but not sure if that will take the air temp as its meant for water but could try it i spose.. otherwise im sure my local pet shop will have something.

how long will this viv last him as i know he'll need a bigger one at some point...

anyone have any idea how old he might be?

Looks like a lovely Amel (albino). You said that he had very little if any white around the saddles, Amels like this are known as 'Sun Glow'.

Hello and welcome to you both .

Is that an Exo-Terra hide you have? If so, they do a digital thermometer with a probe. The probe fits through the hole in the back of the hide. Not sure if that's where you need it with a corn but it works a treat in my royal's viv.

I would invest in a hygrometer also for the type of terrarium you have. I keep my stick insects in mine and the humidity can easily creep up to 80-90%. Ideal for my bugs but probably not much good for your snake. There's also a channel in the lid of those that the thermometer and hygrometer clip into. The 3D backings that they do also have a channel that runs up to the lid. Keeps it nice and tidy and looks great too. Bonus!

If its an aquarium thermometer it should work fine. You dont really want to measure the ambient temp anyway, just the surface temp.
