Hi
We have a year old cornsnake who is about 2.5 foot long. He currently is in a tank 16 inches long, 8 inches wide and 11 inches high.
Is this still ok for him or does he need a bigger tank. The girl in the shop said it should last him till he is about 2 yrs but not so sure now.
Thanks |

Hi, welcome to the forum. A general rule of thumb is length + width is max size of snake, so 16 + 8 = 24" snake.
i.e. yes he could do with a larger one.

Thanks and thanks for the welome, have been reading the forum for a while but this is me taking the plunge and asking a question
What size would be best to get next then? Are we better getting one he will end up in or do we have to move up the size gradually till he is fully grown. |

Hi and welcome.
As what Blackecho says, use the Rule of thumb. ideally he will be in at least an 18x12 (base measurements) viv now, but provided you 'clog' up a 2ft, you should be able to use that. You will have to size up the vivs as he grows, but that'll happen more gradually so it'll be easier to do, unless you get the bug, in that case you'll need a spare room.
And piccys, we ALL LOVE piccys. |

I agree with Kehhlyr, if you go to a 2' viv you should be fine (some would even say a 3' viv now), just make sure there's plenty of hides to stop him getting nervous. |

I would personally go for a 3 footer now and either partition it down a bit or use lots of hides. Unless you plan on getting more snakeys, the more you have the more you can justify and get use out of the middle sizes, otherwise i'd go straight to 3 foot, Peanuts was in a 3 foot viv at that size happy as larry. Just my opinion though :) |

i'd look for a 2'6" viv (just to be awkward different)
or a 3 footer if one was available and like peanuts says use lots of hides/plants/decor so there's not big open spaces in there. BTW heya and welcome pinkfrog |

A 3 foot viv might be your best bet. As kehhlyr has warned beware of the snake bug or a mini zoo will happen. Snake keeping is very addictive. Welcome to the forum aswell. |

Hi
thanks think we will go for a 3 foot and gets lots of hidy holes. Next question at the mo he is in a glass tank with a mesh lid. It was sold as a starter kit. What would be the best type to get next. Another glass one with a top opening or a wooden one with glass fronted doors? Also the heat pad he has now that came with the starter kit will it be ok for a bigger viv or does he need something extra.
I am trying not to get the reptile bug to but already thinking what can go in the small tank once empty. Frogs have been suggested lol |

Go for a wooden one and it will depend how big your heatmat is really as to whether its big enough, it should cover 1/3 - 1/2 of the floor. Or you could go for a heat bulb. |

Hi
Why do you think the wooden vivs would be better? Sorry so many questions but want to make the correct choice.
Any recomendations on were to buy it from I am just outside Edinburgh. I brought the snake from Rintouls in Bathgate so will probably go back but if there is somewere closer/ cheaper it would be good. |

it's enclosed on 5 sides (obviously not at the front) so the snake feels more secure, wooden ones are more readily available in suitable (larger) sizes, they are easy to keep clean - just wipe down - you don't have to worry about smeary glass/scratched plastic, the temperature gradient is more easily maintained .... and they look nicer (personal preference!) |

also, another good thing with wooden viv's is that you are able to make them yourself if you need a different size than whats available |
lost track of the day's now, but I'm getting my amel stripe corn on the 2nd of August!!! |

Hi
We will probably be going for a wooden 3 foot viv. Suggestions for the best place to buy and what would you expect to pay for one. I have looked at a few on line inlcluding ebay and the prices do vary quite a lot.Apart from the furnishings what else would we need for the viv? Thanks |

heatmat (covering half to a third of the floor space), stat, substrate of your choice, 2 hides, water bowl, any extra decor like logs or plants and, particularly if you've previously been using a RUB or plastic faunarium.......... A VIV LOCK!
if you want new you could try 888reptiles or for secondhand try preloved.co.uk or fleabay |

Where are you in the UK? There's a few places that everyone on here would recommend, but it depends on where you are.

My bug is rabbits and guinea pigs which I breed. Now that does get my other half grumpy |
