I was told about the 3 sides, so what did I do to make it nice? :D

I purchased an Exo Terra Backgrounds and plants. It still has 3 sides open, but they seem to love it! They love the trees!

I'll get pictures tomorrow.

Without wanting to be stepped *please don't step me guys!!* take a peek at this:

http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/snakes/174166-do-i-really-need-thermostat.html

I tried it myself in one of my spare tanks and the temp got up to 43*.. snake kebabs anyone?

Still, it would be nice to see pics of their set ups sounds great!

If you wanna safe some dosh you could get a double stat (unless they are in the same enclosure..) Peanuts found a good bargain on ebay I think

1.0.0 miami x crimson corn snake (sirius)
0.2.0 leopard geckos (esma and gytha)
2.0.0 emperor scorpions (bebe and jim)
2.0.0 moggies (othello and tachikoma)

My 3 foot viv has a stat in it but my 12" x 12" doesn't. It's only got a tiny heat matt stuck on the outside under the glass and in all the time I've had it, has never reached even 30C. Dusk doesn't seem to complain, if he gets too warm he moves.

1.0.0 Normal corn snake - Dusk
0.1.0 Strawberry Snow Stripe corn snake - Dawn
0.1.0 Harlequin Crested Gecko - Stickles
1.0.0 Sable Syrian Hamster - CoCo
0.1.0 Hognose snake - Truffles

Maybe its mat specific... And that is true.. they do just move if they're too toasty I don't bother with stats for my scorpions, but they are in larger enclosures and have more places to escape the heat if they want to.. I guess I'd just worry that my snake would cook if he felt like hiding on the hot side and was being too grumpy to move..

1.0.0 miami x crimson corn snake (sirius)
0.2.0 leopard geckos (esma and gytha)
2.0.0 emperor scorpions (bebe and jim)
2.0.0 moggies (othello and tachikoma)

i would never keep a snake without a stat.

1. cos the temp needs regulating to create a better thermal gradient.
2. in case the mat develops a fault and begins to overheat.
3. cos it saves on electricity.

Agree with Daz, imagine waking up to that cooking smell and finding your pet had been baked overnight as the mat had started overheating with no control.

I've had him in there for a month or so. It seems to be fine.

You're right and I can cross the road with my eyes closed once so its safe to do it every time, sorry, but if you can't afford a stat you can't afford a snake in my opinion.

Yeah. But, I had the snake before I dived into the full world of stats etc.
And it's on my GASAP (Get As Soon As Poss) list.

I'm skint for cash anyway, not just because of buying Snake #2.

just out of interest JS, is the brown parcel tape inside or outside the viv?

with mats i think some brands tend to get hotter than others (for the same size and voltage) as some have built in resistors, I think Exo-terra mats can get VERRRY hot (and don't have a resistor) there have been threads on 'the dark side' recently about melted plastic RUBs/fauns/vivs, just because your's in glass doesn't mean it won't still overheat.

The duct tape is to seal off the wiring holes of the background as Sim got stuck behind it!

The heatmat is under the glass. To reduce to much heat and my snakes burning on the glass, I cellotaped sheets of newspaper under the aspen. They seem fine and if they get to warm they move.

I know, it can overheat, but it all seems in order at this current time. Within a few weeks (2-3) I'll have a Stat.
