here is an equally silly question from a newbe, where do you take your temp reading from. i have a digital thermometer that when placed in contact with the surface of the aspan reads up to 36c but if you raise the prob just off the surface so that you are taking the temp of the air 1-2mm above the aspen the reading drops to 27-28c bearing that in mind.
A, both corns are backwards a forwards between the hot and cold ends, and seem to enjoy tucking themselves away in their warm hides. often find them laying on their dry spagnum moss in their hides.
B, most people use stick on probes stuck to the wall of the viv just off the floor, i presume my set up is OK.
your thoughts would be greatly appreciated, do you control air temp just above substrate or substrate temp itself.
Thanks

We have our digital thermometers right on the substrate, under the hot hides as this is where the snake will be. :)

from my findings with how dramaticly the temp changes for a 1-2mm movement either touching or just hovering above the substrate, i bet there are a lot of people running incorrect temps either way. for those that stick a thermometer on the viv wall in the hot end just above the substrate, and control this temp to 28-30c will have a substrate temp far in excess of this potentially nearer 40c. for those that control the temp of the substrate to a temp of 28-30c will have an air temp just above the substrate way bellow this possibly 22-24c. when you look at set up in books it shows temp probes above the substrate in the air in the hot end.
all very interesting stuff and probably open to a lot of debate.

i have thermometers stuck on about an inch or two above the substrate, i know if they read 26-28* then the temp in the warm hide on the substrate is 30*. I check the temps with a normal garden thermometer from time to time so check for any inaccuracies.
