Yeah leave the heat mat on 24/7
But say days in the summer when it's really hot.
Take it out for a few hours

leave it on over night them check the temps tomorrow. leave the matt on 24/7 as said earlier. The heat mat should cover half the tank or a bit less.

That's what a thermostat is for.

Hi, how are you measuring the temperatures?

Heat Mats don't heat the air, so unless the thermometer is on the substrate above the heat mat you won't see anything. Also, if it is one of those Dial Thermometers they aren't very accurate, you can pick up a cheap digital one from ebay for about a fiver.

Something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aquarium-Digital-Thermometer-Probe-Fridge-Temperature_W0QQitemZ360096298319QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item360096298319&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Thanks for the advice. I have been reading through forum info since Rhys posted our ?'s has helped loads. Will check temp again in the morning, need to move thermometers down as 1/2 way up tank - did that before getting all the info! Dial ones at the moment but digital ones a.s.a.p.
Thanx again

No probs, even with the dial ones on the substrate you should be able to see some difference. Good luck
