I have an awesome stick that I would like to put into Sirius' tank.
I know the general rule for things found outside are to bake them or microwave them (and will do so), but are there any wood types that are toxic to snakes? I also wondered if there was a comprehensive list of no-no plants and other items that we could make a sticky out of?
Personally I prefer plastic plants for ease of maintenance/no parasites, infections etc, but for the 'natural look' types it might be worth having a list
Pine and Cedar will be numbers 1 and 2! |

Cedar, Pine and other firs (such as Conifers).
I either bake mine, or, if they are too big for the oven, soak in a 10% bleach solution, rinse thoroughly and dry. |

I thought fruit trees were normally safe, but not sure about grape, with it being a vine.
To google my friend! |

Go to a garden centre or graveyard(wtf?) and get some english ivy and bung it in a plant pot. it takes a few days to take, but is really hardy, so if (when) it gets covered in poo and stuff, it cleans off real easy under a shower without destroying the ivy. Non-toxic, plus if you keep an eye on it as it grows you can use a mesh behind it to make it easier for cleaning. I used to have it in my Viv a few years back, dunno why i haven't done it again, it a strong plant when it takes as well, just keep it pruned.
/edit Common english vine, i.e the variety that grows up your nans garden fence and in graveyards is safe for snakes. From what little I know about ivy plants, it's one of the few non-toxic to snake varieties. |

How long would you bake a stick for? Sounds like I'm trying to sound funny but I'm deadly serious. I've never even thought about cooking a stick. |

I was wondering that but it sounded so silly when I said it out loud that I scoured google first .. two hours at 350*F I've read.. seems slightly long and hot to me though.. I'd worry it would catch fire. Will this remove any toxicity in a pine stick? |

Yes, but so long as it has some form of light it should be good, hence also potting it, with a small home made trellis behind it, it'll eventually grow up and over that and the whole thing can be removed and put on a window ledge every so often as well. I have used small plastic trays as well and sown grass in them, the snakeys enjoyed that, but it's no so easy to clean when it's been poo'd in. |

1 hour at 100C.
As most organisms are made of water and water boils at 100C, you will kill everything at that temp. You need to do it for an hour os so though to make sure that its 'warmed through'. |
