do corn snakes need a basking light?
im gettin a lovely corn snake for my birthday and the man at the petshop says you need a basking light( and a few other sources say that you do) aswell as a heat mat and im getting really confused as so many people say you do and some say you dont. can any one help please

I don't think you do. They are more for lizards and tortoises.

Non of mine have them. A heat mat and a normal light bulb should be fine. In fact, my corns have energy-saving bulbs because they don't really need the heat from them, if you've got a mat.

hi, think about it like this, their natural habitat is southern and central America, not necessary hot climates. Just put a heat mat at one end of their viv which allows the snake to self regulate its own temperature. I, like Kaz, have a low watt bulb in there which allows the viv to be looked into when dark, not for heat.

agree they dont need anyheat from a light or uv a mat will be fine

agree too, a pet shop tried to sell me a heat mat full length of my viv!!wat an idiot, i learnt my lesson on this peace of advice when my python was burned to death, a hot end and cold is would be sufficient

she was a royal python, luved her to bits and was not happy with the poor advice we recieved as new keepers, i now never have any heat source inside viv, only outside
