Hi all,
Just registered after buying a corn snake (first reptile). I bought the snake as a present to myself for my birthday after my girlfriend finally gave in (i had to let her have a cat and dishwasher first :)
I'm not sure of his exact age, his first shed was around 2-3 months ago, if anyone could give an estimate that would be good.
So far I only moved him in a few days ago and he still seems to be a bit nervous if I try to handle him, often slithers inside his hide, so should I let him settle in a bit longer? I read the topic about bites and I did unfortunately jump when he went for me, and I've been a bit nervous since but reading the topics on here next time I'll just try and keep steady. Also, he sometimes wiggles his tail really fast against the tank or his hide when I'm near him. Any tips?

You are best just to leave him alone for the first 7 to 10 days let him settle in, when u do try to handle him try wearing gloves either marigolds or something along them lines that should stop u from being scared. |

Thanks for the welcome and advice, I did think maybe wait until a day or so after his next feed to try and handle, although I will need to handle him briefly to move him for feeding. Also the marigolds seem like a good idea. Thanks! |

it won't stop a bite but it has a placebo effect for the handler

Mine done that and it was a bit nerve racking, but i just used to put my hand in and let him come to me to get my scent then one day he came to my hand and slid onto it and i picked him up, once u have done it the once it gets easier cos u know he will be fine with u next time. |

The more you handle him, the calmer he'll become. Keep persisting and it'll all work out in the end |

As above, give it a week to settle in and then handle regularly.
If its first shed was 2 or 3 months ago, its 2 or 3 months old. They tend to have their first shed about a week after hatching. |

I bought my first corn 1-2 weeks ago, let him settle in for a few days, (3-4) Now I can handle him perfectly although he still tries to sneak away from me! :( |

Thanks for you help guys n gals, he is due a feed on Saturday so I'm gunna try before that so I can move him into a separate area for feeding, and I have to admit I have bought some marigolds lol. But I think the main problem is me jumping so hopefully the gloves will stop that. Once he is used to me he will get handled every day, I'm gagging to at the moment :) |

Hi & Welcome to the forum At the risk of stating the obvious, make sure you wash the gloves inside and out to get rid of the latex factory powder that is on them before he snorts the rubber during handling And enjoy. |

Yeah went fine, only handled him for a short time to get him into a feeding tub, then very briefly to get him back into his tank, shook the pinkie around this time with tweezers, he struck like a beaut and pulled the pinkie out of the tweezers. Was great! |
