| one of our one year old corn snakes has somehow escaped the cage. we have looked under and behind everything. does anyone have suggestions as to how we might find it, should we put the heating on in the house, so it doesnt get cold? |

Do you know what room its likely to be in?
Leave water bowls and hides down. Maybe try a pinky in an empty pop bottle.

| thanks, the cage is in dining room, which opens onto every room, we've checked under every sofa and bed, and anything which is on the floor, and are hoping its not gone inside the sofa frame. will follow your advice about water bowl, and hides, and hope for the best, thanks |

climbing the stairs was part of Beech's exercise regime  but like BE says look closer to (his) home before worrying about that. my main concern if i get an escapee is my cats, do you have any other pets? if so it would be worth shutting them out of the room the viv is in, if that's possible. good luck finding him/her carpe *crosses fingers* |

try masking tape traps...
piece of tape going from skirting board to skirting board. sticky side up so if he slithers across he will get tangled up.
DONT use tape that is very sticky or this will cause big probs when trying to free him.

| Tried a box cave partially on a heat mat yesterday, with water bowl outside, but no luck, so we're gonna put several of these dotted around tonight. We have a cat, which has free roam during the day, but is shut in the living room at night, which has no gap for the snake to get into. We were supposed to feed them thursday, but will try a mouse on heat mat sunday night, if not found before, by which time he should be very hungry |

| Good luck and keep us updated, don't lose hope though, one of ours went awol for a year with two cats and a dog, he was found in the neighbors garden, so it's always worth considering! |

| have put plenty water bowls and hides out, and last night put out a mouse on a heat mat, but still no sign. thanks for all your messages, its made me more hopeful that we still will find him. major look everywhere in middle of the week when i'm off work, so fingers crossed. |

...and failing that, might resort to the masking tape idea, but i know i'd be awake half the night keeping checking on it, so he didnt get too stressed if caught!

Well said.
You could also try flour down on the carpets and also high places, (dont forget to keep looking up high and under things) or talc powder, so if you miss seeing him, you will know where he is or has been prowling.
Get your neighbours to look too, as some floor joists sit on the party wall and are not closed tight. |

personally i think the masking tape is the best idea.
covers alot of area for little mess(flour is messy) but i do understand about the your worries about the stress but you have to weigh it up. being caught in tape or possibly going missing for months, with predators and lack of food and water and warm places to feel safe in.
i really hope he turns up soon for you and remember to check your wash basket before putting washing in machine...kaz found her little fella going round and round in the machine.
luckily she got him out in time |

With respect Dazb, you are talking of a tape sticky enough to hold, trap and prevent the further escape of a snake.
If the snake is in shed, it will just lose its skin or part of it risking injury.
Also, if the snake turns up with a wound from being caught on something like a carpet gripper rod or a nail from under the floor, it may cause the wound to open.
I have seen a snake caught in tape, and it was not pretty.
I really do hope he turns up and that was a good tip, for checking the washing etc, but i would not suggest tape of any kind.

| It's got to be masking tape to be ok- they don't really get trapped in it- just makes them rustle a bit more as they move so they are easier to catch |

no worries mark, this is wot the forum is here for. to swap tips, ideas and experiances and to learn from each other
that is the tape i meant. you can get some from B&Q, homebase etc that is specifically designed not to be too sticky. used for putting over fresh paint so it doesnt peel the paint off.
i would NEVER reccomend use of normal tape or parcel tape.
it was just a tip that is reccomened in the keepers guides and manuals i have read. |
