Hi Chrissy, welcome to the forum.

I would check the snake for any signs of a kinked spine, any retained shed (might look like it needs peeling), one that's not too nervous, try to handle any that you're interested in, one with a feeding/shed record that has had at least 4 feeds.

Have fun

As BE correctly says, and in addition....

(In general, and not just hatchlings or larger)

Let the guy selling the snake take it out of the viv for you.
If he's nervous picking it out, its a sign that he knows the snake is unpredictable.

I would check that the snake can support itself when held from the vent, it should also be able to bring its head back up to your hand.
It should be active and tongue flicking when handled.
Some keepers when selling, (breeders or shops) cool the snake by turning down or turning off the heat to make the snake less active to disguise the bad behaviour of some.
The enclosure should also be reasonably clean, as you would expect from a shop.
A common birth defect is a kinked tail or spine. Try not to feel sorry for the little one with the funny looking tail as some defects can result in costly vet bills for restricted organs, xrays, treatments etc

heya and welcome to the forum
in addition to what BE posted, you shouldn't be able to hear them breathe (no rasping wheezing sounds) and no bubbles blowing from their nostrils. if either of the above symptoms are noticed steer clear, it could have an RI (respiratory infection)!

years ago before i knew any better i bought a corn with an RI from a 'reputable' shop then had to fork out on vets bills!

Yes, The medicine is Baytril and is injected in a measured dose for the weight of the snake. Too much can cause burns and scarring.

Some are known to come to your hand, but more to see what it is or whats in it.
Just put your hand in and pick him out. Dont hesitate, cos it will be nervous and you will give it time to think.

When i hold my little one it comes onto my hand on it's own and i have never gone to pick it up, never had too as soon as the top comes off my perfecto viv it is straight up there and sliding onto my hand, which is sweet. Welcome to the forum there are a lot of people here that have helped me so much and it's a great place.
