Posted - 30/03/2010 : 13:54:27 As already mentioned in a previous thread I'm having trouble with too high a hot end temperature in my 09 Corn's viv. Since I already have a heat mat and stat I've decided to switch, at least until the snake is big enough to go into a 3 foot viv.
My question is that on the instruction leaflet from Habistat it says to put the mat on top of some polystyrene. Is this nessacery?
Also do I rubber band the probes for the stat and thermometer together and weigh them down on top of the mat, or should the thermometer probe be on top of the substrate (which will be a very thin layer of aspen)? |

have been scratching my brains for ages of the idea of putting a light in harley's viv theese look just the job!!
how bright are they? i'd rather have a low watt light source [/quote]
They are adjustable. I have them on a medium setting and it's plenty bright enough to see |

Posted - 31/03/2010 : 04:57:46 I am the same as Morph, have the probe for both my stat and digital thermometer weighed down with rocks touching the heatmat, and then the heatmat covered with a very small layer of substrate....deepening it to burrowing level over in the cool end.
I am probably wrong but the fact that the cool end was getting too hot could very well be to do with the bulb you are using as I know I had that when I was heating the viv with a bulb and not a heatmat (not my choice ) and I am so glad I have now changed over to a heatmat, stat and digital thermometer....with a low watt bulb.
What temps are you getting each end? (sorry if this has been mentioned in previous thread, havent checked it)

Posted - 30/03/2010 : 22:55:59 poly isnt required in a wooden viv its only required when putting the mat under a faun, rub or glass tank as will insulate and direct heat into the tank etc rather than lettin excess heat escape elswhere

Posted - 30/03/2010 : 22:48:47 i have a habistat mat in my wooden viv with the sensor and probe banded together, it stays at a steady 29-30 with a thin layer of substrate over the mat |

Would covering the polystyrene aswell in tin foil in order to reflect the heat up work or would it damage the heat mat by causing it to get to hot.

Posted - 30/03/2010 : 14:53:13 Cheers Danny. The little guy has just fed a few minutes ago, and I've ordered a low wattage daylight bulb (being in a converted attic it's quite dark) so once that's arrived and he's cleared himself out I'll get the mat rigged up. |

You could either rubberband them together or you could put the therm probe onto of the substarte but make sure that it is touching the substrate, with a thin layer of aspen it shouldn't make a difference. |

Posted - 30/03/2010 : 13:55:13 Sorry that should say too hot a cold end temperature!
Also I should have said it's going inside a 2 foot wooden viv. |
