Posted - 17/08/2009 : 15:11:56 Hi, i have brought a 2 foot corn snake 3 days ago and put it in a glass viv and i have a heat mat connected covering just under half the size of the viv (underneath the tank). some times the glass gets misty, even tho the bowl is in the cool end can you tell me why. And the warm side is reading 29c and the cool side is reading 23c is that normal, i have put the snake on aspin bedding also. however i have been reading that most of you have a thermostat that is connected to the heat mat, do you need one?, if i do can you recommend one that is fairly cheep and works well, and my thermeters are sat on the aspin bedding each side of the tank but there are not digital, if i am missing anything can you please advise Thanks Dan |

Posted - 18/08/2009 : 12:13:49 am i write to say that a habistat turns the mat off when its too hot or does it lower the temp of the mat. but can you get ones that lower the mat temp, if so is that better than the one that turns it off. thanks |

Posted - 17/08/2009 : 19:44:50 the probe of the digi in the warm end should ideally be in the same place as the probe, I use a cable tie to keep them together and thread it through the plants so he doesn't move it around and place them IN the warm hide touch the glass where the matt is.
Same for cool hide, but you don't need two stats for this digi thermo in the cool hide on the aspen.
pics of your set up may help aswell

Posted - 17/08/2009 : 18:57:35 if the viv is properly ventilated then the glass shouldnt fog up- check there is no spilt water and damp aspen. as stated above, thermostats are essential, and a mat should NEVER be used without one. they can be picked up for around £20-£25 pounds . |

Posted - 17/08/2009 : 18:56:34 cheers, what should the cold end be then, and is there anything i can do to stop the glass cracking |

Posted - 17/08/2009 : 18:13:54 Mats get up to 100 Degrees C, but they use infrared and heat up the surfaces of objects so the glass could crack. 30 Degrees C is the hottest the viv should get at the hot end. |

Posted - 17/08/2009 : 18:09:15 ok thanks, how hot does the mats get if there is no thermostat, and what should the temp be either side the tank?. and when i get the thermostat and thermeter when do i place the exatly in the tank, the thermeter i know under the substrate but where, Thanks Again |

Posted - 17/08/2009 : 18:01:36 If you get a digital thermostat then it can be inside the Viv under the Substrate, This will give a reading that the snake will be subject to. This is more important than how hot the Mat itself gets. |

Posted - 17/08/2009 : 16:36:10 Hiya,a thermostat is essential for accurate heating otherwise snakie could be too cold or could get burnt there's lots of sites that do them at good prices and maybe some on here for sale if you look in the for sale section but I found this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Habistat-Mat-Stat-Thermostat-100W_W0QQitemZ330352333399QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects?hash=item4cea889257&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14. Digital thermometers are more accurate than others I had a dial thermometer when I first got flora and it was way off but again e-bay do some cheap digis. I no expert and I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable members will tell you more if need be hope you get it sorted |
